You were right. Neither of us could ever be happy as we are right now. You are meant for great things, and I don’t know what I am meant for. I’ve spent so much time doing what was expected of me that I don’t know what I want or who I am.

I’m leaving Tuisa.

Maybe just for now, maybe forever. I’m not sure yet.

The only thing I know for sure was that I couldn’t live like this, not without you. I don’t know my future, but I know yours. And it will be more than either of us can imagine. You deserve it. You need your freedom to achieve your destiny.

I would only hold you back.

I will always love you. Because of that, I’m letting you go, like you asked.

Make the best of your life, make this decision worth it.

I’m pretty sure you’ll need to read this part out loud. I said it as I wrote it, but you’ll need to hear it for it to take effect. It’s better this way.

I, Nassau Kobe, of the Tuisa pack, accept your rejection. In return, I reject you, Bailey Easton of the Aisling pack.

She read it twice, her heart breaking, but not the bond. Searching for Ava, she looked up, but she was on the phone, her back turned as she paced.

She could do this. She didn’t need Ava.

Murmuring the words out loud, she ended their bond to start the healing.

“I, Nassau Kobe, of the Tuisa pack, accept your rejection. In return, I reject you, Bailey Easton of the Aisling pack.”

Immediately, the pain in her chest ran through her whole body, and she crumbled, crying out. Her wolf woke up for the first time in a week, howling and going wild. She stumbled out of the Jeep, reaching blindly for Ava. The pain was unbearable and unending, and she couldn’t breathe.

She sank to the grass, sitting on the curb as she rocked, and Ava’s arms wrapped around her body from behind. She didn’t know how long they sat there rocking while the pain subsided, but when her tears dried up, Ava whispered into her ear.

“It’s all over. The stalker made his move. Cass said he’s dead. You’re free.”

The pain in her chest had subsided to a dull ache, and she was able to think, not about the stalker, but about Nassau and how long that letter had been there. “How long has he been gone, Ava?”

Ava didn’t answer at first.

“How long, Ava?”

“A week. Since before your heat ended.”

She nodded, standing up. It took everything she had, but she pushed the ache away, letting the dull throb of pain run throughher numbly. She climbed back in her Jeep, pulling on her buckle robotically.

Ava followed her. “You can always give it a few more days. You don’t have to rush now.”

She shook her head vehemently. “No. This is good. It’s good.” It didn’t feel good. Her heart told her it was wrong, but logic told her this was right. So she sucked it up, and did what people expected of her.

“I’m free.” Like she wanted.
