“Yeah, yeah.” I say. “And toast for breakfast.”

“How about a bagel?” She prods, but it is not a question. It’s an order.

“Butter instead of cream cheese.” She goes to say something. “I hate cream cheese.” I add.

“Fine.” She replies.

“Two hours on Wes’s bus.” I say and hop to the bathroom.

“Just friends.” The sarcasm drips from her voice as I enter the bathroom.

She doesn’t understand. Yes, I’m excited because it’s Wes’s bus, but I’d be excited if it was anyone’s bus at this point. I’m just glad to have a little freedom.

I’m just finishing my bagel and a cup of coffee when Wes texts me.

“Good morning. Are we still on for today?”

“Yes. Two hours.”

“Nice. What did you have for breakfast?”

“Bagel with butter and a whole cup of coffee.”

“Good girl. We got Denny’s.”

“What did you get?”

“Grand slam, eggs, pancakes, and bacon.”

“I haven’t had pancakes in years.”

“We’ll have to change that.”

“Late- night pancakes.” I add, remembering trips I used to take with my old band to Denny’s after shows.

“Yes!” He agrees.

“I’m kidding.”

“I think I could get you to eat pancakes.”

“Oh, yeah?”

“I’ll think of a really good prize.”

“When should I come over?”

“Before sound check? What time is your sound check?”

“Two.” I say.

“So, noon then?”

“Works for me.”

“See you soon then.” He replies.

I spend the next hour curled up on the couch listening toHaunting Memories. Wes’s voice is so good. Some lines he sings give me goosebumps. Some make me want to get up and dance. He has a nice vocal range, and his songs inspire me.
