“What the fuck does that mean?” Silas wanted to know.

“We found the dead boy’s phone and we made a call. We knew even if Micha and Joyce didn’t know... what the cartel would do if they couldn’t find his body. We told them what happened and what we did. We begged them not to bring their war to our town. We told them the names of the people responsible for what happened. The cartel knows what we did and why we did it. Most of us left after that. We warned the others and told them to go underground until the hell that was coming was over. We got the word out to the people of Bryan. Well, most of the people know.”

“In other words, right now Bryan is a powder keg just waiting for the spark to set it off.” Bear shook his head.

“Maybe just maybe this is one fire that needs to burn kiddo.” Midge snarled. “It’s time those shitheads get what they got coming. No one is above the law, whether it’s the laws we live by or the laws of decency. Those people don’t fear either one. Karma can be a real bitch but she’ll get you every damn time.”

Just then, Midge heard her phone ping. She checked the message and then she paled. “Oh, shit.” She looked up at Bear. “The war is beginning.” She turned her phone to show him what she just got.

Bear grabbed the phone and he looked shocked. The picture showed war in the streets.

Quint’s phone rang and when he answered it, he listened in growing horror. He got to his feet and rushed out of the house. They heard his car roar to life and they all saw the cloud of dust as he took off.

“I think we need to pray for the souls of the innocents in Bryan.” Nita sobbed quietly.

When Silas and Midge got together....

The bedroom door was thrown open and Silas reached under his pillow for his weapon. He whipped it out and pointed it at the door.

Bear stood there and he halted with his hands raised up at his sides.

Midge reached up slowly and put her hand over Silas’ gun and slowly lowered it. Then she turned her head and looked at her grandson. “Do you always barge into someone’s bedroom without knocking?”

“No ma’am, not usually but no one could find you this morning,” Bear explained.

“And you came barging in here looking for her?” Silas scoffed as he got out of bed.

“No, I was looking to see if you knew where she might have gone. I never thought she'd be in here with you. I mean you did kick her out the other night,” Bear pointed out.

“Don’t be rude.” Midge growled as she too got up.

“Yes ma’am,” Bear answered.

“What’s going on?” Silas asked.

“Quint is here. He and some other agents arrived a few minutes ago and he wants to talk to Nana.” Bear frowned.

“Then let’s go talk to him,” Midge said as she headed out.

When they all reached the kitchen, she went over to pour herself and Silas a cup of coffee. She looked over at Quint and asked, “How did things go?”

“Things went badly.” Quint shook his head. “The battle was over before I even got there. But the aftermath was mind boggling. We found everything you had evidence of and so much more.”

“Did you find Micha and the cop?” She wanted to know.

“We found the officer with a bullet in his head about an hour later.” He shook his head. “We haven’t found Micha yet, but we have every officer in the state looking for him.”

Midge felt a huge ball of dread growing in her gut. She hated this feeling but she had it all the same. She looked over at Silas and saw him looking back. He seemed to know what she was thinking.

“He ran out before the battle even started,” she told them.

“How do you know that?” Quint asked while looking stunned.

“Because that’s what men like Micha do.” She stared at him. “He wasn’t going to get caught in the crosshairs, was he? He sacrificed everyone he left behind but he was getting himself free and clear.”

“What do you think will happen now?” one of the men with Quint asked.

“You can keep looking for him but so will the cartel. You may never find his body but they will.” She shook her head. “This cartel won’t stop until they find him.”
