“Investigations are ongoing,” the voiceover said, as the camera zoomed in on a handmade card for Tina before cutting back to the newsroom, where the newsreader perked up for a story about service dogs.

“It makes you think, doesn’t it?” Adrian said. “If we hadn’t been there, at the beach…”

He looked troubled as he trailed off, and I knew what he was thinking, because I could see the same scene in my mind: Emma’s face transposed over Tina’s,herstory being broadcast on national television.

Everything I’d done with Emma in the car suddenly felt irrelevant. But still, Adrian was my friend, and I owed it to him to be honest.

“There’s something I should tell you,” I said.

Adrian looked at me.

“What?”

I didn’t want to see the devastation in his wide brown eyes, so I looked at my hands.

“It’s about Emma,” I said.

“What about me?”

I hadn’t heard her bedroom door open, but now she shuffled out from the hallway, hair bundled on top of her head in a loose bun, blinking sleep from her eyes.

“Never mind,” I said, not wanting to have this conversation while she was here. My coffee was cold now, but I sipped it anyway. Adrian looked at me curiously, but kept whatever he was thinking to himself.

“Morning,” he said to Emma after a long pause. “Can I get you some breakfast?”

EMMA

I’d noticed the weird vibe as soon as I walked into the living room.

Adrian and Jackson were on the couch, Jackson said, “It’s about Emma,” and when I said, “What about me?” they both fell silent.

It didn’t take a genius to know what they’d been talking about. As Adrian changed the subject to breakfast and fussed around the kitchen, I wondered what Jackson would have said if I hadn’t entered the room. Was he going to tell Adrian about what we’d done?

It felt strange to know they were discussing my sex life while I wasn’t around. Almost like I’d walked in on them reading my diary.

“French toast?” Adrian asked and I forced myself to smile.

“Don’t you know it!”

I wanted to get Adrian alone, to explain what happened before Jackson did, but the situation wasn’t helped by Xavier wandering in, his abs flexing as he stretched his arms above his head and yawned.

It wasn’t like I was trying to keep what Jackson and I had done a secret. I hadn’t mentioned it because the memories were so vivid, and I suspected that talking about it would somehow dilute them. Every time I closed my eyes, I was back there, in the car, his cock deep inside me, and it sent a quiver of desire through my abdomen.

The trouble was, I felt the same way when I looked at Adrian. We all sat at the table as he served delicious servings of toast and when Jackson passed him the maple syrup, it reminded me of Cora’s suggestion.Wouldthese men be open to the idea of sharing me? It seemed so farfetched, yet here they were, two men who’d both slept with me, talking about their appointments for the day without any signs of jealousy or competition.

I watched Xavier chew and swallow. Even if Jackson and Adriandidagree to share me, where did that leave Xavier? He was their boss, and if he didn’t like the situation, he could fire both of them. And kick me out of he apartment, leaving me with nowhere to go.

“Everything okay?” Xavier asked, as he noticed me watching him.

“Of course,” I said, and sipped my orange juice.

Jackson considered me, his eyes lingering on my chest.

“You know, I’ve got a break in my schedule from two o’clock onwards,” he said. “Your tattoo’s healing nicely — what do you say about going for round two?”

For a moment, I thought he was talking about sex. I spluttered around my mouthful of toast and blinked at him, trying to decide how to answer, when he pointed to my chest. “The tattoo.”
