“You’re too quiet,” I said, wishing I could hear his thoughts. “What doyouwant?”

Xavier looked out the window on the other side of the room. Outside, the sky was blue and there were cranes constructing new apartment buildings.

“I want you to be happy,” he said. “I don’t mind what that looks like, whether I’m sharing you or not, as long as you wake up with a smile on your face every morning.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing — Xavier was okay with the idea of sharing me! There was only one problem — I wasn’t sure about the other two. What if they said no?

“You have to talk to Jackson and Adrian,” Xavier said. “Put everything out on the table.”

The idea filled me with dread. Whenever I told Nathan what I wanted, his response was always “no”.

“Do we have to?” I asked, and Xavier chuckled.

“We all know you’ve been sleeping with all three of us,” he said. “You’re not great at keeping secrets… or being quiet.”

Oh no. Had he heard Adrian and I fucking through the floor? Had we beenthatloud?

I’d never been an exhibitionist before, but here I was, having sex in front of the camera at the gym, in the front seat of Jackson’s car, and now loud enough for anyone in the studio to hear me through the floor. What had happened to me?

“I’m so sorry,” I said, but Xavier didn’t seem to be bothered.

“Don’t be. All you’ve done is remind me how much I miss having someone in my life.” He sighed, and gazed into my eyes. “Ever since my sister died, I’ve been afraid to let anyone get close to me, including you. But then, you were more persistant than I’d expected, and damn sexy to boot.”

He ran a finger down my cheek, leaned in and kissed me.

It was tender and soft, and I felt myself melt all over again, as though it was our first ever kiss.

“Emma Kearns?” the nurse said, interrupting us, and I whipped my head around at the sound of my name. My face felt hot — I’d been so caught up in the moment I’d forgotten where we were.

“Yes?”

There was a doctor with her, the same one who’d taken Helen through the double doors earlier.

“Will you be taking Helen home?” he asked, and I nodded. “Here’s her medication,” he said, passing me three envelopes full of pills. “She’ll need to take this one twice a day, these painkillers four times a day with food if she needs them, and this one every night.”

“Okay,” I said, committing the instructions to memory since I couldn’t read his handwriting and knew I’d have to relay the information to Carly when we dropped Helen home. “Got it.”

Helen was still groggy from the anesthetic, so the nurse loaded her into a wheelchair and helped us wheel her out to the car. When Helen tried to stand up, her legs trembled, so Xavier stepped in, scooped her into his strong arms and eased her into the back seat, careful not to hit her head.

“That’s the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen a man do,” I said. Seeing him act so gentlemanly with someone who was vulnerable was even more attractive than his naked body.

“Really?” he asked, with a raised eyebrow.

I nodded. “Absolutely.”

Xavier looked thoughtful and scratched his beard. “Maybe I should volunteer at the hospital, then?”

“I think the charity day is enough for now,” I said. “You’ve got a business to run, remember?”

The streets were quiet as we drove Helen home. Xavier lifted Helen out of the car and helped her walk to the door. Carly met us there and smiled with relief.

“Thank you so much,” she said. She was older than me by a couple of years and looked almost as tired as Helen. “You really didn’t have to.”

Somewhere else in the house, I could hear Carly’s kids playing. Their squeals were happy, but I knew she must have had her hands full.

“It’s no problem,” Xavier said, as he helped Helen over the front step. “Where’s the bedroom?”

Carla gestured to the first door. Inside it was a massive bed that took up most of the floor space. Xavier pulled down the floral duvet and helped Helen climb in.
