Aidan sits at his desk, his white shirt rolled up to his elbowsand the first few buttons undone. One hand is buried in his dark hair – hair that is sticking in all directions – while his other hand is sketching what looks like a ring. He hasn’t shaved. He’s unusually unkempt and absolutely delicious. How could I ever think that someone like him would have feelings for a nobody like me?

He glances up from his sketchbook, and the next moment, his glasses are on his desk and the chair hits the wall behind him as he rushes around his desk.

“Caitlin. You’re here!”

I’m stiff in his embrace, despite how good it feels. Aidan doesn’t seem to mind, he just hugs me tighter. I sniff. I shouldn’t have done that, as now my nose is filled with his familiar manly scent.

“I was so afraid you wouldn’t show,” he mumbles in my hair.

“Why? You don’t need me anymore. You’ve got your revenge.” There’s an unusual bitterness to my voice. Oh, Lord. I’ve becomebitter.

“Caitlin, sweetheart.”

“Don’t sweetheart me!”

I pull out of his embrace, but his strong arms bring me right back in.

Warm lips at my temple whisper, “You have to forgive me.”

“Y-you taught me that hurting the ones that hurt you is better than forgiveness.”

He huffs, his warm breath fanning over my side. “I did say that, didn’t I?”

“How do you want me to hurt you?”

He’s quiet for a while and despite the pain in my chest, I could get lost in the comfort of his arms.

“Perhaps I’ve seen the errors of my ways, and I nowunderstand the power of forgiveness.” He pulls away enough that he can look down at me. “Because I want to make things right, and it will be difficult to do that if you hate me.”

“H-how are you going to make things right?”

His gaze is tender as it roams over my face. “Well, first of all, the two of us are going down to the toilet.”

“What?”

He steps back to his desk and picks up a small pharmacy paper bag. There’s an eagerness to his demeanour as he grabs my hand and pulls me with him out of the office.

“Aidan!” I whisper yell when he’s still holding my hand in the reception area. He doesn’t seem to care if people see but strides over to the door for the back stairs. With me trailing behind him, he skips down one floor to the large, disabled toilet.

“Here we’ll have privacy,” he says and locks the door behind us.

I gape at him in disbelief. “Y-you want to f-fuck me? Now?Here?”

“No.” He shakes his head and pulls a white box from the paper bag. His tone is low when he says, “I want you to pee on this stick to find out if you’re pregnant with my baby.”

“Um…. What?” The words that came out of his mouth do not make any sense.

“We haven’t really been careful and used protection,” he says slowly, as if speaking to a child. Right now, I feel like one.

“But… you’ve pulled out, haven’t you?” There’s white noise in my ears. What the hell is happening?

“Not all the time.Farfrom all the time.”

My head is spinning. Pregnant? When did I have my period last? I can’t be pregnant – I’m only eighteen!

“B-but I can’t! I can’t be! I’m not married – what will peoplesay? Father Murray… My parents?” I gasp. “And what about you? You don’t love me, you’ve only used me!”

“Shhhh…” Aidan kisses the top of my head and wraps his strong arms around me. “We can have all the heavy conversations afterwards. Let’s find out for sure first, yeah?”
