“O-okay.”

He scans my face for a second before he releases me. I watch in a close to paralysed state as he opens the pack and bring out a white plastic stick from the wrapper.

“Go on.” Aidan nods to the toilet and removes the cap.

“Do you mind waiting outside?”

“Uh-uh, I’ll hold the stick for you.”

“While… while I pee?” He can’t be serious?

“I’ve seen you naked, Caitlin.” He winks. “Take off your skirt and panties.”

I want to protest more, stand up to him, but I’m too confused and light-headed to put up a fight. Naked from the belly down, I sit on the toilet seat. Aidan crunches in front of me.

“Spread your legs for me.” I make a small gap between my legs at the same time as I squeeze my eyes closed. “Now pee.”

It takes me forever, and my cheeks are flaming hot when I finally relax enough to pee.

“That’s my good girl,” Aidan says from between my knees, positioning the stick so it hits the spray. When my pee stops, he replaces the cap on the stick and carefully sets it on the sink. I reach for toilet paper, but Aidan stops me. Instead, he takes a few sheets and gently wipes my folds. I want the earth to open, I’m so embarrassed, but at the same time, there’s something very comforting about being cared for like this.

“Stand up.”

As Aidan flushes, washes his hands and lowers the toilet seat,I reach for my clothes. Before I can grab them, Aidan pulls me to him and sits down on the toilet lid, tucking me in sideways on his lap. He wraps his arms securely around me and lowers his face to my hair, breathing deeply.

“Isn’t it funny how… how it’s only as you lose something that you discover its worth?”

“I guess,” I say, although I knew Aidan’s worth before I lost him. He hums deep in his chest, and I can’t but melt into his embrace, the trouser fabric soft against my bare bum.

“I have to be honest with you.” His Adam’s apple bobs. “I set out to hurt your dad… by corrupting you.”

“What do you mean?” I try to move. His arms flex, preventing me from leaving.

“Teaching you to sin? To get back at your dad? That was all part of my master plan. I wanted Finbar’s innocent daughter to turn into a… dirty girl. Wanted to ruin Finbar’s perfect family.”

“No…” The one word comes out as a pitiful wail as my heart drops to the bottom of my stomach. I knew he used me to get revenge on Dad, but I’d held on to the hope that it wasn’tallbad. I blink hard, fighting the tears.

“I know, I know. I’m not a good guy.” Aidan sighs deeply. “But the good thing is, that at some point, things changed.” He pauses, as if searching for the right words. “I’ve always looked for a life partner, and I admired Siobhan and Irene, strong and feisty women, but I never found one for myself.”

“Okay?” Why is he saying this? I’m neither strong nor feisty. Is he trying to hurt me even more?

Aidan runs the backs of his fingers down my cheek where a tear has escaped. “What I failed to realise was… I failed to realise that I wanted to beseenwith a strong and feisty woman. I forgot that a relationship is about the dynamics between twopeople. What Ineedin a relationship is someone I can look after and care for. Someone I can put up on a pedestal and worship.” His lips twitch. “But also punish when it’s called for.”

“O-okay?”

“The person I want isyou.”

The room is so quiet. Did I hear him right?

“What?” I ask timidly.

“I tricked you and fooled you, but in doing so, I foundyou.”

My heart is pumping wildly in my chest. “Me?”

“Yes, you. But I also believe that through my devious ministrations, youfoundyou.”

“I don’t understand.”
