A second later, he’s lifting me up and kissing me breathless. His tongue parts my lips, and he moans softly into my mouth. I grab the back of his neck, weaving my fingers in his thick hair, and pull him closer.

When he puts me down, my heart races, and my cheeks grow hot.

“You’re the best godsdamn mate a demon like me could ask for.”

I freeze in his arms, that word ringing in my mind, recalling…

Every instance one of the heirs has used that particular word.

Axe confronting me in the library, the first time I was overwhelmed with the need to kiss him. “You’re ours, Dove. Our mate. We knew it the first time you blinked into our meeting.”

In the dining hall after the incident in the forest. “Sharing your blood, your anything with anyone beside your mates…” The growl in his voice. The possessiveness in Axe’s eyes.

They told me time and time again, and I wouldn’t hear it. I couldn’t hear it.

They think I’m theirmate, their “demoness”, which is patently preposterous because I’m a godsdamn angel with a soul-bond!

“What?”

“Nothing.” I manage a thin smile. “My vag hurts.”

Dash nods. “Then let’s get you in the hot water.”

Without waiting for him, I head to the hot spring, bubbling, with Bastian already enjoying himself, arms stretched out on either side and head lolled back. The moment I approach, Bastian stands and offers me his hand.

“Thank you,” I say and find my favored bit of rock in the hot spring. It’s the highest spot but still low enough for me to have my shoulders under the water.

Every other position is too low, and my mouth or sometimes my whole face goes under.

Once I’m situated and comfortable, I meet Bastian’s eyes.

“Right. Given that your realm didn’t teach you this, I think you’ll understand what happened best by going back to the beginning.”

“OK.”

Dash gets in, splashing the whole way like he’s not used to such a big body. “Sorry,” he says sheepishly and settles.

“Millennia ago, there were an equal number of male and female demons.”

“Oh, fuck the history lesson, Bash. Look, here’s the meat of it. Men wiped out all the demonesses a long time ago in the Blood Purge. But sometimes, other races will spontaneously have a little demon girl instead of a human or a witch or whatever. Those girls are taken and raised on demon planes to support our population.”

“That’s—”

“It’s atrocious, I know. I don’t make the rules. But here’s the problem. While genetically, these spontaneous demon girls are true demons, they aren’t the demoness of old. The warrior women who led our people and called forth our true forms.”

Bastian nods. “Yeah, that’s way more rare. We don’t know why. Most demon women are just… normal women, and that’s fine. But the heirs and I, we need a real demoness. We need a true form, and you, babe, are it.”

I feel it coming, and I don’t stop it. “But I’m not a demon.”

“I know, I know, but just because you don’t feel like one, doesn’t mean you aren’t. You can’t help the way you were brought up, Dove.”

Dash jumps in. “Yeah, it’s not your fault you weren’t taught this stuff.”

“So, you’re sayingIturned Dash into”—I wave in the giant’s direction— “that because we’re mates?”

Bastian nods. “Only mates can do it. And that’s also why you went intoustrues. That only happens with mates, too.”

“Ustrues...Feeling like I’d combust if I didn’t get railed?”
