What the fuck is this place?

Shrek pulls back some Venetian blinds, ushering us through.

My anxiety reaches a critical level.

I do not know who these people are or what the hell they want with us.

“You think you could leavethateasily?” a deep, gravelly voice states maniacally as a loud thud followed by a groan filters in while we’re dragged through the blinds to the next room.

“Hattrick, lookie whatwefound.” The guy holding my arms pushes me inside. I fumble as my feet try to keep up with my body and stumble into the room. When I look up, the wind is knocked from my lungs. Tears prick at my eyes as I let out a loud gasp as my hand rushes to my mouth.

There are two men—the same two men who chained me up and threw me in the Mississippi River—and they’re holding Cain to his knees while the guy from the club, the one with the stupid rat-tail haircut, punches him in the stomach.

Thud.

Thud.

Thud.

“Cain!” I call out as my body moves before my mind thinks it through.

The guy who brought me in grabs at my hair and yanks it back, which sends a shock wave rippling through me as I yelp in pain, and my back falls against his chest. “What are you doing? Don’t hurt him,” I call out as he and the other guy push Joey and me across the room to stand next to the man they call Hattrick.

He’s tall, and his shoulders are broad, giving him an overwhelming, compelling presence. The dress suit he wears is impeccable. It’s so black it almost appears purple and has pinstripes. His face, though? That face is the most menacing I have ever seen. His features are square and hard, with a spattering of old acne scarring his face, but that only gives him a harder edge. It makes him look even more evil, like he’s been in a serious number of fights over the years. His nose is crooked—it’s obviously been broken a few too many times—and his eyes are the blackest of black I’ve ever seen. He is pure evil dressed in an expensive suit.

I gulp, looking up at him, and he slyly smirks, obviously knowing I’m scared by his stare. I can’t stand looking at him any longer, so I turn back to Cain. He lifts his badly beaten head, his eyes barely opening because they are so swollen. His face is bruised and cut as blood pools at his chin.

“Oh, God, Cain?” It’s like something in him registers, and his breathing becomes rapid, and he begins to struggle and jolts forward as he reaches out.

“Makaylie… fuck! No!” is all he manages to say before the guy slams his fist into his face again. The sound of something breaking echoes through the room, forcing bile to seep into my throat.

“Whatever he did, I’m sure he’s sorry, and he will never do it again. We will never tell anyone about this, just, please… let us go,” I beg, watching Cain fade before my eyes.

Hattrick looks at me and sneers, his chest bobbing up and down as he lets out a manic laugh—a harrowing belly laugh that makes tears fall down my hot, flushed cheeks.

“I was told you were dead, Makaylie. You drowned in the Mississippi. So if I can’t get rid of you that way, whatamI going to do with you?” Hattrick asks, his voice is gravelly and hoarse.

A shiver runs all over my body as he steps up to me.

“Leave her alone. She has nothing to do with this,” Cain finds the strength to shout out as he struggles to stand.

“She may have nothing to do with it, Cain, but you dragged her into it. You sold us out. Selene was killed, and weknowyou’re the one who ratted her out. You turned on us. You turned on the Bachelors andourmembers. On the people important to us. So, if Makalie is so clearly important to you, then the best way to punish your wavering loyalty is to make you watch while I torture her.”

“I don’t even really know her. She means nothing to me. She’s just an easy lay,” Cain demands.

Instantly, I remember our conversation when he told me that if he says hurtful things like this, it’s for my protection. So I play along with it.

“You bastard!” I call out.

“I knew he was a douchebag!” Joey growls as I let my tears roll down my face, making Hattrick think it’s from Cain’s harsh words, not from the fear seeping through my every pore right now.

“You know, if you were just using her, you should have abandoned her before she fell for you, you asshole.” Joey sneers.

Cain stumbles slightly on the spot, looking at me through his swollen eyes.

I know he wants me to keep this going.

So I do.
