“Cain, you said you loved me,” I whimper.

His breathing is erratic, and he’s struggling to stay awake. “I lied to get you to fuck me. That’s it, Makaylie. Nothing more,” he snaps, and his tone is so strong that for a second, I almost believe him.

“While this is incredibly heartbreaking, let me prove a point to you both,” Hattrick says as he walks over, clenching his fist tight, and punches Cain hard in the stomach.

I scream as Cain falls to the floor, coughing up blood. “Cain,” I murmur as Joey reaches out her hand for mine.

“See? Now that provesshelovesyou. Now, to proveyouloveher,” he chimes while walking toward me. I brace myself as he raises his fist to punch me in the face.

“Stop!Stop!I will do anything you want me to do. Just don’t hurt her, please, Hattrick. AftereverythingI’ve done for you, do thisone thingfor me and let them go,” Cain pleads.

“After everythingyou’vedone forme? You want to leave the Baton Rouge Bachelors, turn in your position, and have anormallife, and now you think you can just throw around requests?” He pauses to laugh. “So it seems he does love you, my sweet. Does that make you feel better?”

Tears pool heavily at my chin.

He laughs out another gut-wrenching belly laugh, and I peek at Joey, realizing we’re monumentally screwed.

“None of us are getting out of here, are we?” Joey asks as she tightens her hand around mine.

Hattrick turns to Joey. “I see we have a smart one. Maybe we’ll keep you… a female always comes in handy when the boys get…rowdy,” he teases with a crooked smile.

My skin crawls as I watch him look Joey up and down like he’s mentally undressing her.

“I’d rather die, thanks.” She sneers.

“Well… that can be arranged. Trap, will you do the honors?” Hattrick asks, nodding to the guy with the rat-tail haircut. My muscles tense as I look at Joey and shake my head as he walks up to her, pointing the gun at her forehead.

My life with Joey—my lifelong friendship with her flashes before my eyes. She’s been there for me through thick and thin. She is my rock, and right now, she has a gun aimed at her head.

“Any last words, beautiful?” he asks, as shock overtakes my body.

Joey tightens her grip on my hand as she looks into my eyes.

I need to do something.

Thiscan’thappen.

I can’t lose her.

She’s everything to me!

“No, you don’t have to do this. Please don’t do this. Please, I beg—”

“Cain took my everything from me. I’ll start by taking yours from you,” Trap interrupts with a crooked smile.

“I love you, Makaylie,” Joey murmurs as tears fill her eyes and they fall freely down my cheeks. I glance at Trap and lunge forward, pulling on his arm. He pushes me away harshly, and I fall back hard to the floor. The concrete beneath my ass is so cold it sends a chill right through me, my hand breaking from Joey’s. I reach up to grab her again as she looks me in the eyes with a weak smile.

“No, no, no.No.No—”

BANG!

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

MAKAYLIE

My body jumps from the extremely loud sound echoing through the warehouse, and I shut my eyes so tightly I’m scared they might fuse together as I shake all over. The unmistakable sound of a body slumping on the floor shortly afterward sends a shiver running through me so harshly that nausea makes my stomach roll in waves, and I let out a heavy sob, too scared to move for fear of reality.

“Makaylie… I’m so… sorry,” Cain whispers as I brace myself and slowly open my eyes, hoping it’s all a dream.
