“I can’t believe you’re a cop,” I state, still in shock, and he smiles.

“Neither can I sometimes, cutie pie. Neither can I. Come on, let’s get you down to the precinct. We will need your statements on everything they’ve done to you.”

I glance back at the warehouse. “Shouldn’t we wait for Cain?”

He glances at the woman cop, who nods at him, and he turns to me. “He could be a while. Let’s settle this, and then we’ll figure out where to go. Okay?”

I swallow hard, not liking the sound of that. “Is Cain in trouble… like, will he face jail time?”

Rodberg smiles. “No, cutie pie, he got a plea bargain. Let’s go.”

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

MAKAYLIE

The next three hours are spent trying, as best I can remember, to give statements on the Baton Rouge Bachelors. Telling the FBI everything about Cain and the incidents I’d had since meeting him. I just hope I’m not getting him into a deep fucking mess. But when one of the most influential underground crime rings goes up in flames, it’s nice to know that Cain and I might be able to rise from the ashes and live a somewhat normal existence together.

But with the persistent probing from the detectives, I don’t know what more they want from me. The relentless questions about the Bachelors that I don’t have answers to, the delving into my personal life with Cain that they have no right to ask me, then the torture of bringing up Joey, it’s becoming too much to bear.

Another wave of pain sweeps through my body, while the memory of Trap callously and carelessly unloading the round into Joey’s head like that and the way her beautiful body collided with the floor—I can’t get the sound out of my mind.

It’s like it is replaying over and over.

Repeat.

Rewind.

Repeat.

A never-ending loop of misery, reminding me of how I failed my best friend.

I let out a sob, my hands moving to my face to capture my tears as the officer in front of me exhales and folds the folder on the table shut. “Okay, Miss Rayne… I think we have enough information. I can’t imagine what you have been through this evening. I’m sorry for your loss, and the department will do everything we can to help you. Officer Rodberry will be your handler for now. He’s outside and will fill you in on where to go from here.”

Wiping my eyes, I nod. “Thank you.” Standing, I make my way to the door of the interview room. It clicks and opens to another officer guarding the door. Walking out of the room, I crack my neck to the side, feeling empty and hollow.

Joey is dead.

My body aches all over from the pain it’s endured.

I need to see Cain.

I want to know he’s okay.

Then, I think I might be able to function a little better.

Rodberg walks up to me, his eyes droopy and his posture heavy. I don’t like the look in his eyes when he steps up to me.

God, I won’t be able to take it if Cain didn’t make it.

“Oh no, Rodberg, please tell me he made it out of there alive?” I beg, reaching forward and grabbing hold of his collar.

He wraps his arms around my body, holding him to me, and my bottom lip trembles as I shake my head slowly, knowing I’m not going to like this news.

“Makaylie, he’s fine. He’s alive.”

My body slumps in his arms, and a rush of relief washes over me as hot tears pool in my eyes, making me want to sob in reaction. But I know there’s more, so I cling to him for dear life, waiting for the rest.

“Trap is on the run. After the death of Selene, he’s gone rogue, and until we find him, we don’t think Cain is safe.”
