I exhale and clench my eyes shut, nodding and letting my breath out, but not really understanding what he’s saying.

“Makaylie, he’s gone.”

My eyes fling open, and my breath catches. “What? Wh…what d-do y-ou mean?” my voice breaks as it stutters.

He gestures to a nearby room, leading me inside. Huffing, I follow, then he closes the door behind me. “Rodberg, talk!”

He grimaces, but continues, “Cain’s been placed in witness protection. Given a new name and a new place to live until we can apprehend Trap.”

I shake my head and breathe a little heavier. “Okay… well, I want to go with him.”

He slumps his shoulders. “It doesn’t quite work like that. We’re going to put a protection detail on you too. We need to watch where you live for the time being. One we can monitor more closely, but, honestly, we don’t think Trap will attempt to come after you as he knows you’ll have a permanent watch. But I know Trap. Vengeance will be on his mind. He knows Cain sold Selene out to NOLA Defiance, so he wants Cain, probably Defiance too. That will be his end goal. So, I don’t think you have anything to be afraid—”

“Are. You. Kidding. Me?”My stomach twists, and I sink into his grip.

I just lost Joey.

Now I’m losing Cain too?

“I wish I were. I’m going to be staying in the same apartment complex, so we’ll only be a few floors away from you if you need me.”

I look up into his eyes and sigh. “Okay, so how long is this going to take? How long will Cain be gone? A week? A month?”

Rodberg steadies his shoulders. “Honestly, I don’t know. But prepare yourself. It could be a long time.”

My stomach twists as the realization sets in.

After everything.

After all we’ve been through.

Hattrick has won.

And that bastard is still calling the shots.

Because I’ve lost Cain in the end anyway.

I burst into tears. My body is unable to handle it anymore, and I sag into Rodberg’s arms, going completely limp.

The emotion is too much.

The grief, the despair, the loss, they all overwhelm me in this desperate hour of need.

Cain is gone without a trace, and I may never see him again.

The Bachelors won.

They tore us apart.

The problem is, I don’t know how I am supposed to go on without Cain.

Rodberg begins walking us toward the exit. “Let’s get you home. The guards I requested should already be set up at the apartment. You need to rest. It’s been a massive day.”

Nodding, I couldn’t agree more. All I want right now is to get away from this police station. For some reason, being here feels like I am betraying Cain. “Yes, take me home, please.”

“You got it, cutie pie,” Rodberg states opening the door to the room.

We walk to the parking lot and jump into his van.
