Chapter 12

Cass

Jake has been backon his feet for two weeks. I must be driving him crazy.

When either one of us is at work, I’m constantly texting and calling to check on him.

I’ll be leaving soon, but until then I have this need to know that he’s safe. It never occurred to me that Lincoln would go after him.

Just thinking Lincoln’s name reminds me of a question I’ve been meaning to ask.

“Hey Arin,” I call to the back of the shop. “You never did tell me what you did to Link’s tattoo.”

The sound of Mika and Arin laughing hysterically reaches me. “Arin, what did you do?”

“You ever hear of uv ink?” She asks.

“Isn’t that what you sent me out to pick up that day?”

“Yeah Fiona asked me to experiment with it. So Link asked for a black and white tat of a film reel. That’s what he got. However, hidden with UV ink in the negative space is the word “ass”.”

“How do you hide something in a tattoo?” I’m confused.

“Negative space is the blank area in the design and UV ink can only be seen under a black light.”

“Don’t forget about the penis,” Mika calls out from her workspace.

“I may or may not have included a penis on his tattoo.” Arin answers.

Now we’re all laughing, but the customer waiting in the lobby doesn’t seem to be getting the humor. He’s looking downright frightened until I tell him, “Don’t disrespect your artist and you’ll be just fine.”

A few minutes later Arin walks out giving customer care instructions. When she turns to the guy in the chair to ask him if he’s ready.

“Yes ma’am,” He replies.

“Don’t call me Ma’am, it makes me feel old.”

“Yes Ma’... I mean yes.” He stutters, looking scared again.

I’m rolling with laughter when Arin gives me a confused look before escorting him back to her workstation.

An hour later when his tattoo is done, he pays me before running out the door like his ass is on fire.

“Cass, what the hell was that? The guy barely said two words to me the whole time I was working on him.”

I can’t help but start laughing again as I tell her. “He overheard part of our conversation and thought you were going to put a dick on him. I told him he would be safe as long as he showed you respect.”

Mika, who walked in during the explanation, looks between me and Cass, then all three of us burst out laughing. I’m laughing so hard tears are streaming down my face.

The thought of leaving these women behind suddenly turns my laughter into sobs. I don’t want to go but there is something I haven’t shared with them. I haven’t even told Jake.
