Last week I was contacted by a detective in California. Someone from Lincoln’s production company reported him missing.
He had been acting erratically the last two years then his sudden disappearance raised some red flags.
After reaching out to his lawyer they found that during our engagement, I was named beneficiary of his entire estate.
After we broke up he never changed the paperwork.
It takes me a while to pull myself back together but I manage it after going to the bathroom to wash my face.
I have a date with Jake tonight. We have so little time left before I leave that I refuse to let Lincoln steal one more minute from me.
When Jake walks in the door to escort me to our date, my heart feels like it’s being crushed in a vice. I plaster on a fake smile determined to enjoy the time I have left.
We’re walking out the door hand in hand when Arin comes running out of the back.
“Oh, I’m glad I caught you. Fiona just called. She needs me to fly down to White Summer and fill out some paperwork. I know you were planning to leave at the end of the week, but could you possibly stay at least one more week to help out Mika?”
“Of course,” I reply without even thinking about it.
I’ll take any excuse to spend more time here, instead of dealing with the mess back home.
It feels weird thinking of California as home. I’m more at home here in Alaska than I’ve ever been anywhere else.

We all have a plan and it starts tonight.
Helping her into the truck, I run around and get behind the wheel. She reaches for my hand after I put the truck into gear.
“Where are we going?” she asks, but it’s a surprise so I don’t tell her.
When we pull up at my cabin she looks at me confused. Taking her hand I take her to the shed in the back where I have my quad that’s ready for us.
The engine is so loud she can’t ask questions as I drive her through the woods. The way her arms wrap around me from behind brings me peace.
