Damn.

But I didn’t care.

How dare she lie to fake Roxy. Welovedher scent.

There was a long silence, then I heard the sound of her boots stomping across creaking floorboards. The door was ripped open, and I was looking up at a pink-cheeked cutie-pie with a furious expression on her face.

“What are you doing?” she demanded.

“I’m behind on Omega Studies,” I said.

“You don’ttakeOmegaStudies,” she snarled as I picked myself up from the floor and folded my arms.

“Exactly.” How could I not be behind, then? That seemed obvious. “So. Why are you up here instead of in class?” I asked, eyes narrowing as I peered down at her.

“No… reason.”

“You’re hiding.”

“No.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“I just…” She trailed off, swallowing. “I just wasn’t sure I’d got the back properly.” She patted her bun anxiously. “Didn’t want to go out if it wasn’t right.”

“Alright. Well… if you want to come back with me, I still have studying to do this afternoon. I might be better company than a…” I peered into the room behind her, ignoring the way she tried to shift to block my sight, though she was too short, anyway. “A mop.”

“I found it like that,” she said.

Withthe ponytail? I nodded solemnly, like that made complete sense.

“But I guess I could come back and study,” she blurted.

I side-eyed her as we made our way back to the apartment. “Do you want me to tell Dusk about this?”

Dusk had been a tense ball of aggravation down the bond all day, stubborn idiot. He thought shehadrun off to ‘peacock’ for her mates.

“No…” Shatter trailed off, unsure. “I mean… I don’t know.”

I almost laughed. She’d hidden upstairs all day at the threat of Dusk never fucking her again, much too proud to just turn around and go back to her nest. Possibly to make him suffer. It was working, too.

“All I’ll say is that your mates certainly didn’t see you like this. Yeh?”

She chewed on her lip, working through that, though I could see the flicker of relief in her eyes. Then she shrugged. “Sure. I guess… that’s fine. I mean.” She tugged at the loose strand of her straightened hair that had tumbled from the bun. “He’d be pissed at me otherwise.”

“Right. You wouldn’t want another punishment,” I said, noting the way she scowled furiously, cheeks even redder than before.

I bit back my grin.

The two of them were the most stubborn creatures on the whole damn planet.

TWENTY-FIVE

UMBRA

Despite intruding onto her mop study party, Shatter joined me in my room for studies when we got in. I’d left out afternoon Arkology class early to come and find her, so we had the place to ourselves.

Things were looking up. Ransom hadn’t attacked Dusk in over a week.
