“I don’t like admitting when Dusk is right, but you dolook even more fuckable in person.”

My lips parted in shock at his words, but then I finally caught his scent, distanced as I was now from Dusk’s midnight opium.

Wolfsbane and blood.

What kind of fucked up alphas were they? Both with scents that were far from what I’d been told to expect.

You’re one to talk…

“Mostomegas hate my scent,” he said, guessing as to why I’d paused. “If it makes you feel any better.”

I shook my head before I could catch myself. That… wasn’t my reaction. I wasn’t normal, and alpha scents had more of an effect on me than the average omega, yet something about his scent was particularly comforting. More so knowing that most people hated it. His was earthy and sharp, like that first outdoor breath of air after the first spring rain, and not unpleasant.

“Where’s… your third?” I asked, distracting myself from the charming smile on Umbra’s face at the hint that I might not hate his scent.

Ransom Kingsman was missing. He wasn’t pack lead, since that was Dusk, and yet the packwasnamed after his family.

“Doesn’t much enjoy fancy events like this,” Umbra said.

“It was required,” I countered.

“Nothing’srequiredof Ransom,” Umbra chuckled. “He’s a Kingsman.”

I let that settle in; a member of this pack even less tied to the rules than Dusk.

“So, that’s your scent matched pack?” Umbra shifted closer, still eyeing me with interest. “Condolences.”

I shot him a sour look but didn’t reply. There was something off about him—too intense, like his casual words were weighted with something else.

A front.

A lie.

I tilted my head, trying to understand what I was seeing, but then his next words tripped me up entirely.

“I’d have deep-throated Dusk too if it meant not having to fess up to that.”

My gaze slammed to Dusk, fury twisting my face, but he didn’t look smug like I’d expected. His expression was rigid, and for a moment I saw his eyes flick toward my mates’ table, a darkness in his eyes.

Umbra was unperturbed, his voice sing-song. “I can’t wait to see what scent the universe decided was enough to handyouover tothem.”

Despite the slander, my heart leaped with sudden hope.

They’d allow my scent blockers to wear off?

If that happened… and I could justgetto the Lincoln pack…

He made a sound somewhere between a hum and a purr. “Don’t get ahead of yourself. We’re keeping that scent all to ourselves.”

I gritted my teeth and tried not to, but I couldn’t help glancing up at him. I despised that every single thing they did or said aroused curiosity. Despite everything, theyweresomething different. Something I’d never seen before.

My stomach clenched, wondering what the coming week would be like.

I said nothing, trying to keep my anxiety in check as they ate. Dusk slowly prodded at a plate of roasted veggies and rice. Umbra was working on a variety of snacks, some of which were from shared dishes at the centre of the table.

A server stopped by and asked me what they could bring me to eat, but I shook my head and he left.

People were staring, I realised.
