I couldn’t remember all of what I’d said.

“N-no.” I tried to drag my gaze from the text on the screen, blood thundering in my ears.

Not trick them.

Iwouldcome clean.

But I couldn’t wander around this school with golden eyes. It wasn’t safe.

I fought the tremble in my fist as I clutched the knife.

He could bite me into a dark bond right now, and no one would blink. I’d be at his mercy for the rest of my life. Every command from him or any of his pack would be law for me, a compulsion I couldn’t fight without excruciating pain.

That was the threat I lived under with these eyes. That was the warning of Aunty Lauren, telling me to stay in the Estate, to be a maid for the rest of my life.

Stay safe. Stay hidden.

I… I couldn’t. Not when Iknewmy mates were out there.

I needed that photo gone—if he sent it around the school… My scent blockers wouldn’t wear off until tomorrow afternoon. My mates would never discover who I was.

He still watched me, waiting for me to say something else.

Was he angry at what I’d done? The packs here were prestigious. I knew many here might consider my presence as a gold pack an insult.

“I was going to tell them,” I hissed again, trying to make him believe me.

He breathed a laugh, entirely un-threatened by the knife pressed to his throat. “Who arethey, Gem?”

I shivered at the nickname, my hairs standing on end. My instincts told me to back up right now and flee for the way he watched me. For the way he’d said that name. Something about it was a promise.

A promise I didn’t want.

“I… c-can’t tell you.”

He cocked his head. “I wasn’t under the impression you had achoice.”

“Ican’t.” My teeth were gritted. This was it. Three months of my life to reach this point. There was nothing else on the other side.

“How very protective you are,” he breathed.

My voice was choked. “I swear I’ll kill you before I let you ruin this.”

Would I, though?

His smile stretched, and he lifted his phone in a taunt. “Killing mewouldruin this for you…” He tilted his chin slightly as if testing out the way my knife felt at his neck. “Whateverthisis.”

I swallowed. “What do you want?”

“I askedwhothese lucky alphas were.”

“I…” I had to measure my breathing so panic wouldn’t overtake me. “They’re not a part of this. Tell me what you want from me.”

I’d given up everything to get here, and I was so close. I jumped as his grip closed around my waist, dragging me against him further until I was firmly on his lap. I stilled, a chill running up my spine at his touch. It was foreign, something entirely new.

“A choice, then…?” he asked. I flinched as he brushed my cheek. “That’sifyou don’t want the whole school to know before the ball.”

I tensed. “What choice?”
