“No. But the pack in this room, they took something. As far as I can tell, it’s linked with your pack.”

“You think… if we know what they took, we could figure out why we’re still sick?”

Decebal looked uncertain. “It’s the only lead left.”

My memories had long collided with those videos, moments merged—torture with entertainment.

I felt the moment 31 died, a splintering tear through the pack bond.

He’d got free, and Umbra had followed, but I’d been too scared to take more than a step out.

I heard the gunshots in the distance.

Flynn was on his feet in the room, crossing to the pad on the wall. “No.Don’t you dare killhim—” Flynn cut off as a gunshot rang out, audible even from the camera feed. “Fuck!”

Umbra had me by the shirt. “Get back inside.”

He looked wild.

“B-but he’s…” He was dead.

“Get inside!” He was shoving me through the door despite his trembling.

31 had died. Our pack mate…

We should have splintered into a million pieces, but somehow… we didn’t.

Flynn balled his fist, and the rest of the pack was on their feet. “Do you know how much I had riding on this?” he snarled into the comms. “I don’t care how many people it takes to get him back in the cage. They weren’tsupposedto get out—and they weren’t supposed tofucking die?—”

“Wait—wait!” Eric looked down at his phone, then back up at the screen. “It’s not over.”

“How?”

“They… said the bond didn’t break.”

There were only two of us left in our pack, something that should have been impossible. And in the centre of it, was Umbra. My rock.

The one who kept us together.

“We just can’t do that?—”

“I’ll double my bet.” Flynn cut off the voice coming from the intercom.

There was a pause. Eric and Gareth had frozen, staring at Flynn. Then the static rang out in the room again. “Doubleit?” the voice asked.

“I haven’t got much choice, do I, since you killed their fucking pack member.”

“We don’t usually take this route until later?—”

“There isn’t a later. You said if they survive the poison, they stay in?” Flynn demanded.

“Yes,” the voice replied. “But with only two members, I mean it’s unheard of. And the risks?—”

“I don’t care about the risks.”

“That’s a lot of money, if you lose,” Eric said to Flynn, looking unsure. “And if they kill each other it’s over?—”

He cut off as Flynn slammed the comms button. “Just give them the fucking poison.”
