“She has enough going on without having the whole academy hating her,” I said. “And if everyone thinks she’s the victim, then…” Well, it was the best of all the bad options.

“Shit.”

“What?” I asked, glancing up again.

“The Lincoln pack,” she said. “If everyone finds out they’re her scent match, they’re going to look…”

“Like the fucking monsters they are?”

This was about more than image. When she returned with us, they would be angry. If the whole school saw me as an enemy, the Lincoln pack would too. It would shift their attention from her.

And the fact that they would be ruined if the scent match ever became public? Silver fucking lining. It was a tiny thing in the bigger picture, but I was going to relish the looks on their faces when they realised how badly they screwed up.

“You’re going to stop hiding her scent, then?”

“When she’s ready.”

I wouldn’t push her on that. It was her choice.

Roxy was already backing up to go see Shatter.

“One more thing,” I said, halting her in her tracks. “The Lincoln pack?—”

“It’s over. I got an email saying they’d dropped me for inappropriate conduct. They’re claiming I sabotaged political relationships. Goes against the contract.” She sounded resigned.

I had underestimated her. For some people, getting dropped would have been the end of the world. Getting chosen by a pack meant her tuition would be covered, but if they were claimingRoxy violated the contract, they could withdraw it. It would also wreck her reputation. But instead of leaving, or going to a bar and drinking, or going back to her family for the weekend to mope, she’d stayed here, waiting for Shatter. By the gaunt look in her eyes, she hadn’t slept much.

“Stay here tonight. I’ve talked to the Dean. There’s an open apartment two down since the Rodger pack merger. It’s yours.”

“That’s alright. I’ll find a place off campus.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Why?” Was she scared of the Lincoln pack?

“Getting into this school, it was great, but it’s not cheap. I know some omegas sharing a place, I can see if they have a?—”

“It’s covered.”

Roxy folded her arms. “I can deal with student loans like everyone else.”

“I wasn’t asking.”

There was a long silence.

“You gave up the Lincoln pack sponsorship because of my pack,” I said. “To protectmyomega. It’s covered. Plus, I’d rather you were close in case they’re a problem.” It wasn’t like the Lincoln pack couldn’t catch her entering and leaving campus. At least this way I could keep an eye.

“She’s probably tearing her hair out waiting for you,” I added, seeing her brewing a stubborn argument. She ran her tongue along her teeth, then sighed and nodded, heading down the hall to Shatter’s nest.

TWENTY-NINE

SHATTER

“Shatter!”Umbra grabbed me around the waist and hauled me away from the bookshelves.

“But I?—”

“No.”

“She’s going to?—”
