When I finally looked up, I saw there were tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Shatter. I tried to…” Her voice wavered. “I tried to find you, the second I knew?—”

“I know.”

It was why I loved her voice. It was the only voice I’d heard when I was in that room. The only voice that wasn’t theirs.

It was the moment I’d realised she really cared about me.

I had a friend.

And she’d blown up her contract with the Lincoln pack to get to me. She’d been here all weekend, and she’d…

I frowned.

What about all her stuff? Classes were tomorrow morning, and her things must still be in the Lincoln pack apartment.

How would she study properly?

Wait wait wait.

I stumbled from her arms and launched myself across the room in an instant, pulling open the drawer of my desk before I found what I was looking for. I grabbed the pencil case and rushed back, holding it out to her. “I have a spare one—I-if you need it.”

Well.

Actually, I’d have to put together another one, since mine was gone. But that was okay. Umbra had saved my registration card, and that’s all that really mattered.

Roxy took it from me, a smile on her face that dispelled the building nerves. “Thank you.”

“And… obviously anything else you need until you can get your stuff.”

“Thanks. Dusk offered to set me up in an apartment on this floor. I don’t know when it’ll be ready.”

My heart lifted. “You’ll stay over tonight?”

“They seem alright if I take the couch?—”

“No, I mean like…?”

Roxy’s eyes lit up. “Like a slumber party?”

A… A what?

“Yes. I mean… I-I don’t know if my nest is good for that?—”

“It is. I love it in here.”

“Oh. Okay.”

“So. Pyjamas. Gossip. And we’ll need slumber party food.”

My mind emptied of everything but pure alarm. “R-right. Well, my Pyjamas are in the closet. Do you want to find us some, and I’ll go get the slumber party food?”

Slumber party food?

As soon as I was outside and the door was shut I panicked. I ran down the hallway so fast I almost tripped right into the living room on my face.

“What’s wrong?” Dusk looked alarmed as he crossed toward me, eyes scanning my expression. “Shatter, about earlier?—”

“No no no,help me!”I hissed. “Roxy wants a slumber party, and she said there needs to be food.”
