“Umbra went out to get it?” I asked, much too hopefully.

“Umbra’s been watchingBreaking Badsince you came in here,” Dusk said mildly.

Oh.

My heart sank, but I felt a giddy little thrill at the same time.

Dusk had fetched me teaanda teapot?

That shouldn’t make me pleased. I hated him, still. Even when those dark eyes of his bored right into my soul, and brainless butterflies lifted in my stomach every time he looked at me like that.

“Do you want me to bring it in?” he asked, peering into my nest.

I seized the tray from him.“No.”

He grinned, and I almost stepped back, but something halted me. I blinked down at the teapot, a question trapped in my throat.

“Is Umbra okay?” I asked, suddenly guilty. He’d left earlier with Dusk. But he’d been so unwell…

“He’d say yes, but I could send him with the next tray?”

I chewed on my lip and nodded. “Best I look him over. Just to be sure…”

The smile that played on Dusk’s lips made me want to kick him.

“And, just so we’re clear, the answer is no,” he said, leaning against the door frame, arrogance across every inch of his face.

“No, what?”

“No, me bringing tea and orange jam doesn’t mean you haven’t still got a punishment coming.”

My gaze snapped to him, and I knew heat was crawling up my cheeks. My nest was saturated with arousal right now, which explained the wetness between my thighs as he said those words.

I stepped back before I could say anything that would get me in deeper water with him, then slammed the door in his face.

I hurried back to the bedside where Ransom was stirring, tray clutched in my grip. All my worries of Dusk slid away as Ransom’s glittering green eyes found me in the dark.

He was awake, and more present than I’d seen him yet.

I set the tray down on the side table and crawled over to him. Ransom wasn’t my mate, but he was sweet, and caring, and sort ofmine. He’d even protected me from Dusk.

It was my job right now to balance him, and mates simply had nothing to do with it. It was just what a good omega would do. I was doing my best—I’d even tied his hair in a bun with one of the scrunchies, since it was a bit tangled. But he didn’t seem ready yet for me to tackle that properly. He was much more interested in holding me closer. Or sex.

Sure, a pack as rich as this could pay omegas to fall all over Ransom to keep him well—I whined at the thought, dragging him close—but Icouldbe as good as any of them.

The spark in Ransom’s eyes was fading, though. He wasn’t all back, and even as I watched his focus drifted, the muscles in his jaw tensing.

Dammit.

I needed to do better.

So I sat him up and fed him my favourite snack (though he refused the tea) and purred for him until he settled once more, and then I drifted off in his arms.

UMBRA

Despite my disgust at the mere idea of it, Dusk forced me to discuss what happened. And not the nice Shatter-in-heat shit, either. He wanted to chatfeelingsand all the negative shit.

“You nearly died.” Dusk leaned back on the couch, pausingBreaking Badand rubbed his face.
