Instead, I felt the contact get caught on my eyelash.

“Shatter?”

My fists balled in fear. If I looked at her now, she would see the colour of my eyes.

How could I leave without her seeing? There was no way…

I dared reach up in a last-ditch attempt, hoping I could push it back in and undo this mess.

Of course, at the nudge, it fell.

I watched it tumble from my eye as if in slow motion, and jerked forward to catch it. But the contacts that hid golden eyes were clear, coated in a sheen that subtly shifted gold to brown. They were almost invisible to spot. One second too late, and it was gone.

My breath caught, and my gaze raked over my skirt, my knees, the floor which was made of old hardwood, with dozens of cracks it could slip into.

Gone.

My breath caught.

“Shatter?” Roxy sounded worried. “Are you okay?”

I tried to force my voice calm, but my knuckles were white on the edge of the table. “I have to go,” I whispered.

Could I get back to the apartment with no one seeing?

I was still searching my skirt and the floor desperately. Maybe it was caught in the crease of my clothing?—

“Babe.” I saw her reach out in my peripheral, and then she took my hand, squeezing. “If something happened, you can tell me, I promise?—”

I felt the brush of her touch too late as she swept my hair out of the way. I glanced up on pure instinct for a split second before I slammed my eyes shut.

My blood ran cold in the darkness, knowing I had been too late.

I heard her little inhale of shock.

The sound that meant that Roxy knew I was gold pack.

NINE

SHATTER

"Shatter—"

Roxy cut off as I shifted my chair back. "I have to go."

"No." She grabbed my wrist with a death grip. "Don't move. It… it fell?"

"I…" I swallowed, eyes still firmly shut. "I need to?—"

"You aren't going out there like this." I could hear her moving, her fingers brushing my skirt as if searching.

She was worried for me?

But I didn't understand. Why hadn't she said anything else?

"Fuck." Her voice was muffled, like she was under the table.

I dared peek out of one eye to see my assessment was correct; she was on her hands and knees with her phone flashlight on.
