I took it from her, glancing up. "He let you in?"

"I told Dusk and he didn't ask any questions."

"Thank you." My voice was weak. I fumbled to put them in, relief flooding my system as I did. But I waited for her questions, unable to fully dispel my nerves.

How was I going to answer them?

"Are you alright?" she asked.

I blinked, gaze flitting up to her again. Her dark blue eyes were full of concern, rather than judgement.

"I think so."

Kind of. As well as I could be, I thought.

There was another heavy silence, and I broke it, too anxious to wait. "I uh… I have amnesia. I don't remember anything before I was 19."

She frowned. "Nothing?"

I shook my head. "So I, uh…" I trailed off awkwardly.

Becoming gold pack—not turning up for the Institute's injection within a year of perfuming—was a choice. One that most judged harshly. "I don't know why my eyes are gold?—"

"You don't owe me an explanation, Shatter."

I bit my lip, suddenly feeling like I was going to cry again.

"It's illegal," I whispered. If I was discovered to be hiding my gold pack status, I could get in a lot of trouble. Would she be in trouble if I got caught and someone found out she knew?

"Well." Roxy cleared her throat. "Last year when my car broke down, I made seven grand from mailing scent marked clothing to lonely alphas and betas, and I, uh…" She dropped her voice to a whisper. "I didn't declare a penny of it. So I guess we're even."

Wait.

What?

That drew me up.

I suppose shedidhave a lovely scent. I didn't think many omegas smelled like Christmas.

"What kind of clothing?" I asked with a frown.

Her smile grew positively devilish, but before she could answer there was a knock on the door.

I glanced up, heart pounding until I reminded myself that my contacts were secure and present.

When the door opened, I was surprised to see Eric peering in. At his scent of passionfruit, my stomach did an uncomfortable swoop.

"Oh. What's up?" Roxy asked.

"It's ten minutes later than when you said you'd be done," Eric said, frowning. "We don't have much time to study before the party."

"Right," Roxy said, glancing at me. "Actually, I might have to bail?—"

"No. That's okay," I said, quickly. I didn't want to be the reason Roxy looked bad in front of the Lincoln pack. Not after everything.

"I have… everything I need." I smiled awkwardly at Eric before meeting Roxy's eyes.

"Are you sure?"
