“Things have changed. I…” He trailed off, eyes darting to the papers again.

Changed? What had changed for him today?

“You stayed with us when you could have left, and now Ransom…” He trailed off, wonder in his eyes. “He’s almost back. I should have let you in before now.”

Ransom…That was it. He was maybe hours from being fixed…

My stomach twisted in terror as my mind wandered to the notes. He’d not wanted a bond with an omega until he could besureit would work.

And now he wanted to talk… To let me in?

A dark bond I would never see coming…

I tucked my fist behind my back so he couldn’t see me digging my nails into my palm, fear spiralling out of control. “I… I came to you about Ransom,” I said.

I had to stall him—to escape and get to Roxy before anything else happened. She knew I was gold pack—I could tell her everything. She would tell me if I was overreacting, or if my fears were real. She would know what to do.

Dusk frowned. “What about him?”

“He… He took a turn for the worse.”

Dusk’s eyes went wide. “He did?”

“Not physically. It’s his aura… It’s hard to explain, but I can feel it in the bond. That’s why I came to find you. I think he should come back to the nest tonight.”

“Oh…”

“It’s urgent. I don’t know what’s wrong or if I’m just not… not enough.”

He crossed toward me and it took every ounce of my control not to run. He cupped my cheek and tilted my chin up. “You are enough, Shatter. Of course you’re enough—you’re a miracle. I’m sure it’s just a setback.”

I nodded.

“Once he’s balanced, then we can talk. Just tell me what you need tonight.”

“I think I just need to be with him alone,” I said.

“Absolutely. I can go and make some tea?—”

“No.” I cut him off too fast, panic rising in my chest. I couldn’t handle his sweetness. The reminder of what he had been to me. His brows came down. “I just mean… I think I need to be totally alone with him. No interruptions. I just… I want him to get better. Maybe… if I do a good enough job, he’ll be back with us tomorrow.”

Dusk’s smile was devastating, and it was hard to shove the tears away.

“Okay. I’ll bring him in.” He pressed his lips to my hair, a purr rising in his chest as he held me against him. It vibrated through my body, soothing and beautiful. “Don’t worry,” he breathed. “You’ll fix him. You’re perfect, Shatter.”

I almost cracked before I’d shut the door of my nest behind me.

Ransom was right on the brink of being healed.

A low sob sounded in my throat, but I clutched it, needing to hold it together just a little longer.

Was that the only reason I wasn’t dark bonded?

He had to know I could fix his pack first. He already knew all he could ever offer me was a dark bond. A bond for life. A way to force me to stay forever.

They weren’t my family. They were using me as Ransom’s cure.

What would happen after—when he no longer had to pretend?
