I… I was… I had to get them to a safe place…

“Ransom?”Decebal’s voice was urgent but too far away. The world was spinning.“Ransom!”The phone was slipping down my cheek, but I jolted at his tone, lifting it back.

“Are you hurt?”

“I…me?”

“Yes. You. Areyouhurt?” His voice was fading in and out.

“Ransom?”

“He was injected.” The low voice beside my ear was new.

I blinked, realising it was the alpha with piercing yellow eyes. He was holding me up, and my phone was in his grip. I stared at him. He was so steady, while I was shaking and falling apart…

How… How wrong was that?

When it was him I’d almost got killed.

“Who is this?” Decebal asked.

The world was still spinning, worse now with black spots in the corner of my vision. The soothing voice of the alpha sounded again, but I couldn’t see him anymore.

“He was injected by something when he saved us. I don’t know what.”

The low curse on the end of the phone was the last thing I heard before the world went black.

RANSOM

Present

I drifted in and out of reality like a tide that couldn’t quite reach shore.

Ithink…I’d banged an angel.

?

Impossible.

Probably.

Unless I’d died without realising. An angel of death, maybe—beautiful all the same… But in flashes of reality, she was everywhere. We were one, breathtaking and entangled.

It felt like I had been absent for an eternity. Meeting Dusk and Umbra was a blur in my past. My hands shook as I introduced myself to the two strangers now bonded to me.

No other choice,I’d been told.Too unstable. I would have died without the bond.

I didn’t resent it, though.

Instead, I felt unworthy of it.

Then came the darkness. I was plunged into a pitch black nothingness that lasted an eternity.

Their scents, midnight opium, wolfsbane and blood, were my only connection to time and meaning, giving me threads of presence even in the deepest void.

But now the darkness flickered as I’d found the beautiful eyes of my angel. The tunnel, finally, had an end.

I’d thought at first, she was a reaper. An angel with poison, here to finish me at last. But instead, her poison had been vicious enough to claw through my cage of darkness.
