Keeping up was so hard. One small drink shouldn’t have me this slow, I was just so exhausted, and broken, and now things were spiralling quickly.

“I’m not promised to them,” I stammered. They had it all wrong.

“What family did you come from?” Gareth asked, totally ignoring what I’d said.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“None that’ll be a threat to our name?” Eric asked, looking to Flynn.

“To a Lincoln?” Flynn snorted. “No one in my family needs to trade their daughters away like animals.”

“So…?” Eric pushed.

Flynn shrugged. “If we mess it up, they’ll take the blame.”

Mess it up?

Gareth grinned, eyes darting to me in a way that made my skin crawl.

“I already have her confessing to stalking us,” Eric said, tugging his phone from his breast pocket and tossing it to Flynn.

“W-what are you talking about?” I asked, eyes wide.

What did that mean?

Flynn was looking at the phone with a smile.

Had he been recording what I’d said?

Why?

“That’swhy they picked you so fast at the ball?” Eric asked. “And why Dusk watches you like a hawk? I bet they have something riding on it working out.”

No, no. This was all wrong.

I could fix it.

All I had to do was tell them I was their mate, then they’d understand and it would all stop. I hadn’t wanted to, but then I’d made this all happen with my stupid crush lie…

I opened my mouth, but froze as Flynn turned and casually flipped the lock on the door.

The world seemed to slow, and the words got stuck on my tongue as fear gripped me.

Instinct warned me to silence, adrenaline flaring in my veins as I looked between them.

“Wh-where’s Roxy?” I asked, my voice cracking.

Eric snorted. “She’s in her room. Wanted to dodge the whole evening.”

In her room?

Dread crawled up my spine as I stared at him. He’d had planned this since the moment he’d opened the front door.

“W-what do you want?” I tried to keep my voice steady, but I saw the truth Dusk had been warning me about all term. He… had been right about them.

I tried to edge toward the door, but Eric shoved me back against the wall easily. The movement was almost casual, predatory.

I swallowed, glancing to Flynn and trying to hold myself steady. “I w-want to leave.”
