Pure fear was the only reason they weren’t dead. Umbra had returned the moment he’d felt us through the bond—that was when she’d started screaming, feral and broken.

“They should be dead,” I muttered.

“Umbra had the same sentiment. But if it makes you feel better, from what I heard, they’re going to wish they were,” Decebal muttered. “I’m not blaming you, but that kind of shit is going to ruin your plans if it keeps happening.”

I shut my eyes as he continued to work, peeling off the covering on my chest this time.

“Whyare the brands all over your fucking chest, mate?”

“They’re her…” I trailed off, still not recovered from the last wave of hatred. “The scars they gave her.”

There was a long pause and I heard him breathe a curse.“Bites?”he asked at last, as if he didn’t really want the answer.

“Never…” I grit my teeth as I felt him prod at another wound. “Never seen anything like it.”

“You’ll get revenge.”

Not soon enough.

We fell into another silence as he worked.

“Have you checked your texts?” he asked, when he was about half way done.

“Phone’s dead.”

I didn’t want to charge it. Not with the video I’d been sent. I didn’t want to see it—I didn’t even want the possibility of seeing it.

“I went into the apartment,” Decebal said. “That friend—Roxy—is in there.”

“I told her she could. She told us Shatter was gone.”

“Figured. Sent an email to the Dean to get her into the apartment on your floor. Thought you’d want her close.”

“The Lincoln pack—?” I began.

“Dropped her.”

That meant they knew she’d ratted on them. It meant she may not be safe.

This conversation wasn’t enough to keep me grounded in sanity. Not with the searing pain of each brand as Decebal cleaned them. Not knowing that this was her pain.

And I couldn’t kill them.

I couldn’t dofuckinganything.

Instead, I’d fucked up—I’d goddamned dark bonded her.

Had it been fear? Had the Lincoln pack, stupid fucking idiots that they were, baited me into that?

I’d never seen her hurt like that—I didn’t know how weak I would be, faced with it.

“A bond was a decent solution given the circumstances,” Decebal murmured.

“Decent solution?” I asked. “It was stupid.”

“Then why did you do it?”

I glared at him. “Whenyou’refaced with an omega begging you to do what you know you absolutely shouldn’t, telling you theyneedyou, and you can... can fucking fix everything—then tell me how you fucking do.”
