“Yeah.” She licked her pretty lower lip as her head rose back up and she rested her forehead against mine. “We had the best adventure, and I didn’t want it to end because I was afraid of us coming home and you leaving again but this time forgetting all about me.” The last part of her sentence came out whisper soft.
“Is that something you were actually worried about? When I left for school.” She blinked away unshed tears. I couldn’t help myself. I held her face and wiped at the edge of her eyes with the pad of my fingers.

“As much as I wish I could go back and change things, tell you earlier how I felt, I can’t.”

“But I can make sure things are clear from here on out,” I promised, and I would do that. I’d work as hard as I could, and I wouldn’t stop. I’d make it my mission in life to make sure she knew how I felt about her every day for the rest of our lives.

“You’re right.” Her gaze glittered with hope, and I knew I was getting a little closer to her believing me. My hands stroked her arms and then moved to her back.
“I love you so fucking much, Gem. I promise you, no matter what, you and I? We’re a done deal. You get me? Whether I’m here or at school"—I lifted her hand, so her fingers rested over my heart— “this is yours. Only yours. No matter what.”
“That’s…” She licked her lips and gazed up at me. “That’s pretty intense.”

“I’m learning that,” she answered softly and leaned in to kiss me. I didn’t hesitate and kissed her back. Slipping my tongueinto her mouth, I loved the sweet little purr she made as she opened wider for me, giving me exactly what I wanted.
