“Marry me, Dani,” I rasped. “I know it would be a marriage of convenience, and if you want, we can have legal papers written up so you’re protected, but you can trust me. I won’t screw you over.” She stared at me for a moment then dropped my hand. She stood, and I followed her.

“You want to marry me so you don’t get hounded by fans and the press?” she asked, staring bravely up at me.

“Yeah,”Something like that.

“Something like that?” Shit! I’d said that out loud. Now I was the one blushing. I took a hold of her hand again and rested it over my heart. I couldn’t tell her how I felt about her. Not completely.

“I like you, Dani…” I admitted again, but the words didn’t feel enough. I had no idea why the hell I got so damn tongue-tied around her. “We’re friends,” I reminded her. “We get on and…” I winced. We get on?What the hell did that even mean? “I mean… would it be that bad to take a year traveling and hanging out with me?”

“Friends,” she repeated, and I lost her eyes. That green gaze that haunted my dreams dropped to the ground between us, like it was the most interesting thing in the world. “Is that all we are?” she asked as her head tipped up to meet my stare head on.

“Dani…” My words got stuck in my throat as she licked her lips.

“If we do this, we have to be able to sell it,” she softly shared.

“Right.” I swallowed. My mouth was suddenly bone dry.

“Do you think we can do that?” Her fingers rubbed the spot where my heart was thundering to get closer to her. “Fans can see through anything.”

“I think we could. I know we could,” I reassured her. My arms, with a mind of their own, wrapped around her waist, and I pulled her in close.

Very close.

Flush up against me, I knew there was no doubt she could feel the reaction my body had whenever she was close.

“You feel that, Daniela?” My voice dropped an octave, and I didn’t miss the way her breathing changed. It hitched. Fuck, I wanted to hear that little sound when I was balls deep inside her. “That’s how I am every time you’re around.” Her green gaze glazed with desire and curiosity.

“Every single time. Shit, I don’t even have to hang out with you. Just thinking about you has me roaring to go.”

“You never…”

“You’re young. Probably way too young for me.”

“I’m not that?—"

“You are, baby girl. Thirteen years younger than me is a big difference. I shouldn’t touch you.”

“But?”

“But...” It was time to lay my cards on the table. “If I’m being honest with you, the idea of leaving, not seeing you for a damn year? Feels like the wrongest thing in the world.”

“Jax—"

“I know you have goals and dreams. I’m just some almost old guy who used to be someone. You deserve better, and because of that, I’ll take what I can. Okay? Marry me. I know it’s a business deal on your end but?—"

“Kiss me,” she interrupted, surprising the hell out of me with her request.

“What?”

“Kiss me. Show me you can sell it. Show me you can prove that you’re remotely attracted to me. I mean, I can feel…” She made a face and glanced down between us. “But men wake up that way.”

“You don’t think I’m attracted to you?”

“I think you could have anyone. If I remember right, you dated a lot of amazing women.”

“I did. And I left a trail of broken hearts, too.” Jesus, I’d been an asshole.

“And I’m not particularly anyone special, Jax.” I lost my damn mind. I couldn’t stand her talking badly about herself. My body and heart immediately reacted. I pulled her impossibly close.
