One of my hands skated up her back slowly enough that if she wanted to, she could have stopped me. But she didn’t. Her body was pliant in my arms, and when my hand rested at the back of her head, I dipped my head down, and she knew what was coming.

When my lips touched hers, her eyes were already shut, and she met my mouth stroke for hungry stroke. I’d meant for that first touch of our lips to be soft. Tender. But Jesus, the softness of her lips against my firm ones brought something else inside of me to life.

I had no idea why it surprised me.

Being around Dani had taught me a lot about myself, about the man I had no idea I could be or even wanted to be. She sighed, and like a bastard, I took full advantage of it. My tongue swiped at the seam of her lips, seeking to deepen the kiss, and she opened for me. But not fast enough. My hand tightened its hold, tugging gently on her hair, and she moaned.

Fuck! My Dani girl was perfection.

Our lips danced a tale as old as time. My tongue mimicked what I could only dream my dick would do given the chance to take things a step further. I had only meant to kiss her. Jesus, the road to hell was paved with good intentions.

But let’s be honest, I already bought a one-way ticket there with my past transgressions. The only type of heaven and redemption would be with the beauty in front of me.

I had meant the kiss as a way to quiet her. Stop her from talking badly about herself. All while proving we could play it off in front of an audience, but the kiss got out of hand.

Before I knew it, I’d picked her up, her short legs wrapped above my waist as I carried and sat her on an empty spot on the breakfast counter right next to the delicious cupcakes she had stayed up way too late baking. Her legs opened without me saying a word, and when I ground against her, I swallowed downthe sexy little purrs she exhaled. I could live off those sounds alone.

When we were both panting for air, I pulled back and held her face with both of my hands like the precious jewel she was. Dani opened her eyes, happy and content but so damn greedy for more that my dick leaked behind my jeans.

“What did you think?” My voice sounded scratchy.

“What?” I liked how disoriented she sounded. Like my kiss had quieted her mind like I intended.

“The kiss. We could pull it off. I promise. You just have to say yes, and we get married today.”

“The kiss. Pull…” she repeated in a haze, and when our eyes met, I knew I’d said the wrong thing. “Right. For the press, umm…”

“Dani—"

“I’ll marry you,” she interrupted me, and I had a feeling she was building a wall around her, one that would protect her from me.

And if I were a good guy, I’d let her.

She deserved better than me. She deserved the good guy. The upstanding citizen who would lay the world at her feet. Not some has-been musician.

“Today,” I repeated, and she blinked.

“Okay. Today,” she agreed, unknowingly handing me the best news of my life. “Let me just deliver these”—she pointed at the cupcakes— “and?—"

“No,” I cut her off. “You’re not delivering those cupcakes.”

“Why not? That would be an extra two hundred dollars!”

“Baby, I know it doesn’t seem like it, but I promise you, money is no longer a concern, okay? I got you.”

“Jax—"

“Do you trust me?”

“Yes,” she answered without hesitation, and it fucking humbled me like nothing else.

“Good,” I found myself saying, thankful as fuck she did. “You’re busy today.”

“I am?” Her eyes widened, and I nodded.

“Yup. Gotta go buy a wedding dress, baby.”

“Today?”
