“Jax? Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” I croaked. My eyes rose to meet hers. “I’ve kind been lying to you about who I am.”

“About who you… What does that mean?” I noticed that not once did she try to take her hand back.

“I’m a mechanic.”

“Okay, I knew that.”

“But I used to be… in a band.”

“A band?” Her head tilted, and her dark strands flowed like water down her shoulder. I wanted to touch the strand.Focus, dumbass!Jesus, everything about her was distracting.

“I don’t know if you ever heard of them, but…” I swallowed hard, “I mean, you were probably too young to be into them, but I was in Soul Obsession.”

“Soul…” She blinked and stared at me. “Jax?”

“We were kinda big, but maybe you never heard?—"

“Oh, I heard of you,” she said softly as she stared at me.

Not in any different way but almost like she was trying to place me. And that’s when she smiled, and her hand squeezed mine. “You know, I always thought your voice sounded familiar. I just… I never would have put two and two together.” I had no idea what I expected, but that was not it. Just like Dani to surprise me with her grace.

“You’re not freaking out,” I pointed out, watching her carefully.

“Am I supposed to be?”

“No. Yes. I don’t know. It’s been a while since… anyhow, remember that favor I asked you to do for me?”

“To marry you? Is that the favor you’re asking about?” She looked like she wanted to laugh, and I nodded.

“Yeah. that one.”

“Okay.”

“Okay, you remember or okay you’ll marry me?”

“How about we start with okay, I remember, and you explain why you need a wife.”

“The band is getting back together.” Her eyes flashed with surprise for a moment before it went away. “We’ve been in the studio.”

“You recorded new music?”

“Yeah.” I nodded. “And, well, we’re going on tour.” This time, her eyes turned to saucers. She tried to hide the surprise, but her green eyes turned almost a little sad.

“You’re leaving.”

“I have to.”

“Oh. Okay, umm…” She took her hand away from mine and shifted in her seat. I stood up. Without her hand in mine, I felt like a lost ship wavering back and forth at sea. I started to pace.

“It’s not what I want,” I confessed, talking way too freely with someone who hadn’t signed an NDA. “I didn’t have the best experience back in the day. I don’t really like who I used to be. I was a fucking kid being handed anything and everything his heart could ever want, and I was a gluttonous little dick.”

“Jax…” I was pacing in her living room as I told her what it had been like, and when I was done, I turned to look at her.

“You’re my only friend, too,” I admitted. She was, even if I wanted her to be so much more than that.

“Jax—" I moved and kneeled at her feet.
