“Are you making this all up?”

“Maybe. Guess you’ll never know.”

“Either way, your mind is something else.”

“Is it? Or have you just never got close enough to a woman to see I’m just like the rest?”

I exhale, lifting my hand behind my head. “Damn… You said therapy would be cheaper, but they don’t call me out the way you do.”

“I aim to please.”

“So how do I find the one for me then? If everyone’s the same deep down as you’re saying, how can you fall in love?”

She laughs, but there’s almost a sadness to it. “You really shouldn’t be taking advice from me.”

“I still want to hear your thoughts.”

“Okay…” she pauses to think for a few moments. “Conditional love isn’t real love. I think love should be a choice. If you’re constantly trying to find someone who thinks or acts a certain way, then you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.”

“So just pick someone and choose to love that person?” I ask.

“Find someone who sees your pain and uses it to build you up instead of a bargaining chip to point out your flaws.”

“And what if she isn’t an option?”

“Well,” she says. “Then I guess you’ll be stuck calling me for the rest of your life.”

“Goddamn,” I laugh. “You know what? Goodnight, Molly.”

“Goodnight, Mr. Smith.”

Chapter 13

Thea

“Fuck!” I cry, yanking my flatiron away from my head after I accidentally clamped down on my ear for the millionth time tonight. It doesn’t help that I’m doing this one handed with a hard seltzer in the other hand.

“Here, let me get the back,” Amanda says, laughing at me.

“Thanks,” I say, sighing as I sit down in the chair in front of my vanity. “Do you think I should wear the red heels or my boots?” I ask again, going back and forth between the two choices. “I’m just not sure if the boots are classy enough.”

“Classy?” Amanda snorts. “It’s a penthouse party, not a fundraiser. And I highly doubt Doctor man is going to be looking at your feet. You know, unless he’s into that kind of thing.”

“Yeah, I guess. I guess I just want to make an impression since I’ll be meeting some of his friends.” I open my eyes wide in the mirror, taking a moment to think it all over. “It’s too early to be meeting friends. We’ve only been on two dates.”

“It’s just a party. It’s not that big of a deal,” she reassures me.

It helps a little. That’s the same reason I said yes when he asked me to come. I wouldn’t normally do three dates so close together to start, but one of his friend’s was having a birthday party in a penthouse right downtown. I figured it wouldn’t bethat big of a deal as long as I bring people too. That way it isn’t so much of a meeting his friends scenario so fast.

Amanda grabs my shoulders and smiles at me in the mirror. “Besides, you can’t back out now. My tits look great in this dress, and I need to find a handsome doctor for myself.”

“As if you won’t have every single doctor, lawyer, and hedge fund manager eating out of your hands by the end of the night,” I say, rolling my eyes.

“Or…” she says, standing up onto her tiptoes for emphasis. “I might already know of a sexy, successful, single man who happens to be on his way to your place right now.” She looks down on me judgingly. “You know, if you ever let go of your claim on him.”

“Mack?” I laugh. “You can have him. I’ve never laid claim to him. It would just be weird is all. Like if you dated Trevor.”

“Bullshit!” she shouts, giggling as she falls back onto my bed. “You’ve never given a fuck about me flirting with Trevor.”
