She turns, looking up at me with no hesitation. “Hi,” she says back, forcing me to speak if I want to continue the conversation.

Amanda comes into the kitchen, and I naturally step away from Thea.

“Can you grab me a hard seltzer?” Amanda asks.

I didn’t think much about putting distance between us because it’s what I’ve always done, but Thea’s eyes drop to the floor before she turns to her friend, cutting me out completely. “Oh, I love your shoes,” Thea says to her. “Are those the ones you were looking at last week?”

“Yes, aren’t they perfect?” Amanda says.

Thea starts walking away with her. “So cute. I need some new boots for the fall. Want to go shopping next weekend?”

I plop down on the picnic table outside across from Thea. The guys are talking about the pre-season games coming up, but I’m too distracted to join in. I pull my phone out of my pocket and open Thea’s text thread.

Me:Make an excuse to get alone. I need to feel you wrapped around my cock.

Her phone lights up, sitting face up on the table. She glances at it, but then her eyes widen when she reads it closer. She covers the phone with her hand, locking the screen again. She waits a minute or two before pulling her phone down into her lap and typing something out.

My phone buzzes in my hand, and I don’t wait a moment to look.

Thea Marie:No.

No? That’s all it fucking says.

I dart my eyes up to her, and she’s trying so fucking hard to hold back her smile. I continue to stare at her, but she moves on, joining in on the conversations around us.

Addy reaches across the table and squeezes Thea’s hand. “Hey, how’d it go at your dad’s place last week?” she asks, obviously concerned.

“Uhm…” Thea says, stalling. I know she doesn’t want to talk about it. She’d rather just move on.

Trevor laughs, not picking up on that. “It was a shitshow. So bad.”

Addison frowns. “I’m sorry,” she says, giving Thea’s hand one more squeeze before sitting back. “What happened?” she asks Trevor.

“He’s just a prick. Mack had to pull Thea out there like it was a combat zone or some shit.”

Thea gives a soft laugh. “It wasn’t that bad.”

Declan stares me down. “Oh yeah? What’d you guys end up doing?” he asks like he doesn’t already know.

“Nothing,” I say way too defensively.

“We went bowling,” Thea adds. “I would have won, but Mack kept feeding me drinks.”

“Me?” I ask. “You’re really going to blame me?”

Declan leans forward on the table, obviously eating this shit up. “Yeah, I think I’m going to believe Thea on this one. Seems like you’re hiding something.”

I glare at him, but he smiles, unaffected. Trevor taps the table a couple times. “Hey, I don’t blame anyone. I know I sure as fuck needed a drink that night.”

Amanda gives him a pity look. “Aw, was it because of your dad or because you were alone again on the weekend because you can’t get a woman to stand being in your presence for more than five minutes?”

He balls his hands into fists, leaning across the table toward her. “You know, I’m still questioning whether or not you’re a robot or an alien, but I’m very clear on the fact that you’re not human.”

“Bitch.”

“Whore.”

Thea claps her hands together. “Alright, enough of that! We’re here to celebrate love.” She lifts her beer in the air. “To Addy and Declan.”
