Blew the original plan out of the water and basically asked her to be my girlfriend.

For real.

Usually this is the kind of thing he’d talk to Michael or Duke about, but they didn’t know the whole truth. Xeni responded immediately.

This is the most high school shit ever.

I was just responding to her text.

Olin’s stomach dropped. He’d loved every minute they’d spent together, but what if she had hated it? What if Meegan was just humoring him? He did pay her, after all. No. Things were still fresh, but he knew Meegan had a no nonsense way about her. If she wasn’t interested at all, she wouldn’t have let him walk her up to her room. See, this is why he didn’t date. One night and his mind was in overdrive. He took a deep breath and tried to remind himself of the facts. If Meegan didn’t want to date him for real, he’d suck it up and move on, and be cool about it. That was the only option. He just hoped there was another option where she wanted to give him a try. He texted Xeni back.

Good? Bad?

Slow down, champ. There’s girl code and all that.

But I will tell you if she tells me to tell you something.

Olin felt himself scowl as he messaged back.

High school indeed.

He’d promised Meegan he’d wait, so wait he would. He just didn’t think it was a good idea to wait alone in his house. He called his dad, then headed down to Long Beach. Before he headed out, he sent one more text to Meegan, just be safe.

* * *

Meegan sat on the edge of her bed, still wrapped in her towel, smiling at her phone. Xeni responded and there was a text from Olin.

Let me know if you got home okay.

She thought about him saying it in his best Batman voice.

Home safe and freshly bathed.

Thanks for checking.

She switched back to her conversation with Xeni, tried not to laugh and failed.

Glad you’re home safely. I forgot what it’s like when you set people up.

You’re both texting me and now I gotta play telephone with two grown ass people.

High school shit, I say!

Did he text you??

Sure did.

What did he say?????

I’m not telling.

Fine. Are you busy today?

I need to vent about my problems in person.

I’m heading over to Sloan’s in a bit. Rafe and his parents took the kids to Disneyland.

I’ll tell her you’re coming.
