“Thank god.” Meegan groaned out loud. She needed some girl talk, stat.

A couple of hours later, Meegan and the bottle of Peach Secco she’d grabbed on the way pulled up to Sloan’s beautiful home in Westwood. She loved her apartment, but she could see the perks of being a heart surgeon. Xeni pulled up right as Meegan locked her doors. She waited and met Xeni right at the mouth of the driveway.

“Eventful evening?” Xeni asked.

“Girl.”

“Girl, come on,” Xeni laughed, grabbing Meegan by her free hand.

“Oh wait. We can’t tell Sloan about the date-for-hire part.”

“Right. We’ll just tell her I set you up and then he said he wanted to be your booooooyfriend.”

“Oh, come on,” Meegan begged. “What did he tell you?”

“I’m not saying, even though I kinda already did. You are both my friends and I owe a certain vow of confidence to you both.”

“Yeah, but I met you first.”

“Yes, that is true. Just know that I will tell you if he tells me anything that triggers my fight response. But only after I tell him to talk to you about it first, directly, because we’re what? Adults.”

“Adults,” Meegan agreed at the same time. “But yeah, I wanna know. Tell me all his business.”

Sloan’s front door popped open just then and the doctor herself poked her head out. “I thought this would be less creepy than watching you on the security cameras. Hi!”

“Sorry, I was just freaking out about a boy,” Meegan told her as they walked up the front steps.

“I wanna hear about a boy. Come in!”

They stepped out of their shoes and followed Sloan into the kitchen. Their home was usually bustling with kids, but today it was quiet.

“How’d you get a ‘get out of Disneyland’ free card?” Xeni asked. She set the bagel sandwiches she’d picked up for them on the counter.

“Oh, Monica insisted,” Sloan replied. “My schedule was packed last week. We did soccer and scouts yesterday, and then my whole family is coming in on Tuesday so Rafe can show off in the kitchen again. She said I’d better get a nap in while I can. Also, it gives her a chance to get her grandma on. I think the only reason they even let Rafe go was so he could hold Rowan.” Sloan’s three year old was too cute for words.

“So instead of napping, you’re gonna get day drunk with us?” Meegan said.

“I will not be getting drunk, but I will be relaxing on that couch with you instead of riding It’s A Small World for the hundredth time. I owe Monica big time.”

“To mother-in-laws we actually like,” Xeni said.

“Amen to that.”

That jogged Meegan’s memory, about the few details Olin shared about his own mother. Maybe he’d tell her more one day, if things got to that point.

Sloan grabbed a few glasses and plates, and they dug into their late brunch around the kitchen island.

“So, tell me all the hot gossip. I’m caught up onMatch Made in Paradise, because Rafe refuses to miss an episode.”

“Oh, I know. His bestie, Mason, told me he’s got half the band watching it on tour and he checks in with Rafe every week. They are both rooting for Sammy and Mitch’s downfall.”

“I think it’s adorable that your husbands love each other so much,” Meegan laughed.

“Rafe can’t wait for them to come off tour. They have so much catching up to do.”

“Yeah, tell me about it,” Xeni groaned. Meegan was used to Duke being away for literal ages, but he wasn’t her husband. She couldn’t imagine what it was like to be missing your man for that long. It was worth it, though. Mason was living his dream and Xeni was proud of him. Meegan reached over and squeezed her hand.

“He’ll be back soon.”
