“She’s playing?” I ask him, surprised and he nods.

“She’s been down here for about an hour I believe.”

I glance through the crack in the door and see her sitting at the piano. Her eyes are closed as her fingers play a melody I don’t recognize. But the look on her face is what kills me. I don’t need to know the song that she is playing to know she is thinking of her mother and of the memories that have been creeping their way back into her mind.

She looks strong and broken simultaneously.

Absolutely beautiful.

She’s going to be the death of me.

CHAPTER THIRTY THREE

KATE

The last note stops playing as I breathe a sigh of strange relief. I haven’t played an instrument since my mother died, worried it would be too hard. But the minute my fingers touched the keys, it would have been too hard to stop until I got it all out. Years of pent up melodies and notes. I run my fingers through my hair, deciding it is finally time to go to sleep whether I have to deal with sleeping alone tonight or not.

I freeze in the doorway as I head back to the main house when I come face to face with Ax.

“I— I didn’t realize you were back,” I tell him uncomfortably.

“I just got back.”

I nod awkwardly, hoping he doesn’t comment on me playing. When he silently lets me past him to get back to the house, I breathe a sigh of relief. We walk back to our rooms in silence and I hesitate before pushing my door open.

“Everything alright tonight?”

When he just stares at me my brows furrow in frustration.

“It’s just really late. I wasn’t sure—”

“Mad I kept your boyfriends out all night, princess?” He snaps.

“You are such a dick.” I shake my head. “My bad for wondering if you were okay.”

I slam my door behind me but it swings back open nearly hitting me.

“No,” I warn him. “Get out.”

His hand runs through his hair, messing up his curls as he sighs at me.

“No, Katie. Everything isn’t okay.”

I wait for him to elaborate but as he steps closer to me, my body tenses.

“But it can wait till the morning.“

“More secrets,” I hiss, and he simply nods.

“Yes. But this can wait.”

“Why?“ I whisper as his hand brushes along my jaw.

“Because I’m sick of breaking you.”

My heart throbs and his hand tangles into my hair grabbing it into his fists.

“Let me just kiss you and lay with you tonight before that happens.”
