Lucky’s hands are off of me and I try to lunge for the door, but someone’s arms wrap around my waist, grabbing me.

“Katie, you can’t be outside alone like this,” I hear Ax whisper in my ear. “It’s not a good neighborhood, I need you to stay with me and calm down.”

“Pussy must be gold. The crazy ones always are the best lay,” Roy snorts.

The sound of flesh hitting flesh fills my ears along with muffled grunts. Ax keeps me facing the wall and I can’t even tell who is hitting who.

“Ignore them,” he tells me as my body trembles. “I’m going to fix everything.”

“You can’t,” I tell him, shaking my head as I can finally catch my breath.

I fidget to get his arms off of me and find Roy sitting in the corner slouched over and covered with blood.

“Only he can try to help me fix it,” I snap, as my eyes find Axel. “But what’s it to you, right? As long as you get your pay day.”

“Listen here little girl. I don’t know what mess you've gotten yourself into—”

“Gotten myself into?” I hiss, and my fists clench at my sides.

My adrenaline has me on edge and if a panic attack doesn’t make me explode my anger surely will.

“I got nothing to do with whoever is after you,” he says uncomfortably as he eyes everyone.

“No. You’re just the piece of shit that for some reason my mom turned to and trusted.”

“I tried to help her, but I couldn't!” He growls, and Red blocks him from approaching me.

“No, but now I need help!” I scream. “I have needed help for years and no one has done shit! The doctors that should have helped me raped me, the father that should have loved me sold me, my mother married me off because you just saw dollar signs before seeing a woman in trouble—”

“You better watch—”

“No! I’m fucking talking this time. I have been screwed over so many fucking times! And yet all of you are more pathetic than I am because you actually had hope that Axel West grew a fucking heart.”

I turn on my heel and find Ax standing directly behind me.

“You should have let me die in that damn fire. It would have been better for everyone. Will you drive me home, Lucky?”

Lucky eyes everyone awkwardly but someone must give the okay because he nods his head.

“Kate,” Eli says, reaching for me and I glare at him.

“Don’t fucking touch me.”

Asher stands at the door with his head down but his jaw tenses as I walk by him and follow Lucky out to his car.

CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR

ELI

My fists are still clenched at my side as I watch Lucky drive off with Kate. This shit went downhill fast, and while it was amazing seeing Kate stand up for herself, I know she’s breaking inside. Her anger is just her protection.

“Her dad really gave her the shit end of the stick didn’t he?” Axel says, sighing.

I see Roy fidget as he groans from the corner and for his sake I hope he stays on the ground until we leave.

“Let it go about the trust fund,” Ax says, eyeing his dad.

“You think they’ll even let you pay them back?” He asks. “What if you pay and they still come after her. Then we are all left with nothing.”
