Page 136 of Saving Kate

“Don’t kill her yet,” I say, glancing at her. “Maybe we will trade her life for Kate’s.”

Mary screeches as we head to the car leaving her there. I’d sooner kill her than give her over to traffickers, not even she deserves that. But she can sit for a few days worrying about it for all I care.

We are driving within seconds and I wipe the blood off of my hands on my jeans. It’ll be interesting if a cop tries to pull us over for speeding but I’ll deal with that shit later.

Eli dials Colt and puts it on the Bluetooth.

“We are about to pull up,” he says as he answers.

“What’s the plan?” I hear Roy ask.

I grit my teeth. I would hardly trust Kate’s life in Roy’s hands but my options are limited.

“Colt, go inside. Roy stay hidden outside, I don’t want anyone knowing you are there, got it?”

They both agree and I grip the wheel in frustration.

“Don’t say a thing to anyone,” Eli adds. “You are just there to work on the security system at the house. Roy is still at the bar.”

“Got it,” Colt says.

“Who’s inside?” Roy asks.

The ones I thought she’d be safest with.

“Red, Lucky, Bianca and her boyfriend Scott. Rhonda should have left by now but Edgar should still be there. Security is off today—”

“I’m calling them now to get back to the house,” Asher tells us.

“How long till you’re here?” Colt asks.

I glance at the GPS and grit my teeth.

“40 minutes or less.”

The ride is too quiet. Our calls to Colt and Roy stop being answered and I can hardly focus on the road as I fly back to the house. When I see security still not manning the gates I make a mental note to fire them all. The car is barely in park as we get out and I pause just outside the front door. The three of us grip our guns silently, we have no idea what we may be walking into and as much as I want to run in ready to shoot everyone, I don’t want to escalate anything.

Inside is eerily silent. We slowly glance through the front rooms but find them empty. The kitchen is the only sign of something happening. The chairs are knocked over and cell phones are scattered into a pile on the kitchen island.

“Fuck!” I shout as Eli heads to the security cameras.

Asher opens the basement door and eyes me.

“There’s blood,” he says quietly.

I glance at the bottom steps that have blood scattered down it. We silently step down the stairs, our guns ready, but at the bottom of the steps I curse.

“Shit,” Asher says, putting his gun in his pants and rushing over to the other side of the room.

Red, Colt, Lucky and Bianca are tied up with tape over their mouths. Bianca’s face is busted with blood seeping from her nose and one of her eyes is all swollen. I rip the tape off of Red’s mouth and he groans as Asher gets to work freeing the others.

“Lucky's shot,” Red warns me, nodding to Lucky beside him.

His shoulder is bloody and his eyes are barely open.

“Where the hell is Kate?”

Bianca startles at my shout and Asher removes the tape from her mouth.
