The words are barely out of his mouth and my body freezes. The can slips from my grasp and clangs to the ground, spraying beer everywhere.

“What the fuck!” Asher yells as the beer sprays at his feet.

“Don’t. Touch. Me.” I hiss at Ax, trying to blink away the blackness in my peripheral vision that’s threatening to take over.

He eyes me curiously but doesn’t say anything. I’m silently grateful for their silence while I calm myself and the panic attack doesn’t progress.

“Question for a question,” Eli says after he finishes cleaning up the beer and hands me a new one. “You tell us what you want to know. And then you answer one of our questions.”

I glare at him.

“And how do I know you’ll answer?”

“We will answer first,” Asher offers as he preheats the oven for the pizza.

Ax glares at both of them. He doesn’t seem to be on board with this game which makes it even more appealing.

“And how do I know you aren’t just going to lie?” I ask, glaring at Ax with my arms crossed.

“How do we know you won’t lie?” He snaps back and my face reddens.

He’s got me there.

“Exactly. Guess you just have to trust us,” Asher says sitting on the counter top with his eyes on me and flashing me a million dollar smile.

“Fine.”

They stare at me while I think of my question. There’s a million things I could ask. Whether or not they know who killed my mom comes to mind but I doubt they’ll even answer that one so it seems like a waste.

“We don’t have all day, princess,” Ax sighs as he brushes his dark curls out of his eyes.

I roll my eyes at him.

“Fine. Why do you guys live here?”

Asher snorts and glances at Ax. I’m surprised to see Eli looking at him too. Guess he’s the ringleader of deciding what secrets get told.

Ax just grins at me wildly.

“That’s an easy one,” he chuckles. “I own the place.”

My face falls. “What?”

He cocks an eyebrow and I turn to Eli and Asher. Their faces are unreadable, like they are waiting to see what I say.

“Is that like a test? To see if you are lying. Because that makes no sense,” I tell him, shaking my head.

Ax laughs and Eli punches him.

“We can show you the deed if you don’t believe us,” Asher offers.

I look at all of them like they are speaking another language. This makes zero sense.

“Wait, you are serious? Then why the fuck do my dad and the step monster live here?”

Asher snorts at the step monster comment. At least someone appreciates my genius humor.

“That’s another question. It’s our turn first,” Eli reminds me and I glare at him.
