“Sit the fuck down, Katherine. I said get on your fucking knees you piece of shit.”

Matthew hesitates as he eyes me but I’m at a loss for words about what is happening in front of me. Matthew gets down on his knees slowly and Axel keeps the gun trained on his forehead.

“Look at him,” Axel whispers as he leans in towards Matthew. “Look atmyson.” Matthew locks eyes with me. “Now you tell him you are sorry.”

The room goes silent and I feel like I’ve been drenched with a bucket of ice water.

“Say it you disgusting piece of shit. You tell him you are sorry that you didn’t fucking protect him.”

“Axel—“ my mom starts but my dad glares at her.

“You better be working on your fucking apology, too. You’re next.”

“Dad…” I hesitate as I step near him but he shakes his head.

“Stay where you fucking are, kid. You,” he says and shoves the gun roughly into the side of Matthews face. “Say it.”

“I’m sorry, Ax.”

My dad snorts. “I’m sorry I don’t think he heard you.”

Matthew visibly swallows. “I’m sorry.”

“For…?” My dad hisses in his ear.

“For… for what my s-son did to you.”

“You could have stopped it. You could have made it right. You could have fucking protected him!” He cocks the gun and my stomach sinks. “I might be a piece of shit. I’m no role model. And I am perfectly fine with spending the rest of my life in jail. But compared to the two of you? I’m a fuckin saint.”

“We tried—“ my mother starts and I glare at her.

“You made excuses to protect that little psycho kid of his. Even now, you have him off with some cushy little life protecting him rather than protecting the child that was in your home and needed you. You’ll both burn in fucking hell, I look forward to seeing you there.”

“Dad!” I finally yell and his eyes fall on me. “Enough. They aren’t worth it. I’m not a kid anymore. I’m safe and out of this hell house. Because of you. So, don’t fucking blow it by shooting them and getting your ass sent back to jail. Let’s fucking go.”

I can see how badly he wants to pull the trigger. Part of me wants to let him. A big part of me.

But I can’t.

“Axel!” I snap. “Get in the fucking car.”

My dad rears his hand back and knocks Matthew in the head with the gun causing him to groan and his nose to start bleeding.

He turns to leave and without one more glance at my mom or step dad, I follow after him. Eli is right on my heels and takes the keys from my dad to drive my car while my dad gets in the car with me to head back to my house. He’s silent the entire car ride and I watch as he flexes his fingers and cracks his knuckles. When we park in the driveway and I shut the car off he finally eyes me.

“I never should have told you to call them to get me a house. I probably shouldn’t have made you go see them for the money for your place before I went to prison but… I needed to know you’d have a roof over your head, kid.”

“It’s fine, Axel.”

He sighs and shakes his head. “No. It’s not. Because everything that girl of yours is dealing with because of that father of hers that fucked her over? I’m no fucking better than him.”

I snort and cross my arms as I eye him. “That what you think? You think you are just like Stephen?”

He glares at me and I shake my head at him.

“You just threatened to kill him so he would apologize to me,” I laugh and run a hand down my face. “Dad, you aren’t evensupposed to have a gun. You literally just got out of prison. And you risked going right fucking back so I’d get an apology?”

I’m laughing so hard my stomach hurts. My dad just shrugs.
