“It looks like a unicorn exploded in it,” I groan, glancing at it.

“That’s hardly a necessity. I thought you meant the plumbing or something.”

“You’re joking right. Did you even see my room or bathroom?”

“No.”

Of course not.

“That reminds me, Ax said something strange the other night—”

“I have to go.”

And just like that, our conversation is over. I stare at the phone in my hand, still surprised that my dad manages to catch me off guard. By the time I head back to the kitchen, Rhonda is alone and she smiles at me.

“You are a wild child,” she says but it doesn’t sound like an insult so I just smile at her. “I haven’t seen someone push Mister West's buttons so much before.”

“Guess it just comes naturally,” I snort.

She chuckles and nods to the cookie dough recipe in front of her. “Want to give me a hand?”

I grin at her as I pull my frizzy hair into a braid and get to work. As we go to slide them in the oven she smiles affectionately at me.

“You aren’t too bad in the kitchen.”

I smile at her awkwardly. “It’s been a long time since I’ve cooked. My mom used to let me help her.”

“She died, yes?”

I nod. “About five years ago.”

“It’s hard losing a parent. I’m very sorry for your loss, Katelyn.”

I smile softly to her and hear someone clear their throat. I turn and spot Eli as he nods his head at me to follow him down the hall. I round the corner and find him and the other two guys in the study that I once believed to be my dad’s. Ax glances up at me from the computer with a dirty look that I return immediately.

“You got something right here, doll face,” Asher says grinning as he points to his own cheek.

I brush roughly at my face but he just laughs. Eli reaches out as though to get it but I step away from him, giving him a warning look. I’m not sure how many more times I need to scream at them to not touch me for it to get through their thick skulls.

Eli drops his hand with a frown and just looks at Ax.

“I have company coming tonight. I need you to not be here without actually leaving.”

“Thanks for the riddle. Care to divulge any more information?”

Eli snorts and Asher just grins at me.

“You can go down to the basement until someone comes to get you.”

My face falls immediately. “You are locking me in the basement?”

“Would you rather a fucking closet—” Ax mutters but he must see something on my face because his face loses all color.

“No basement needed. I won’t be here.”

I say nothing more as I turn on my heel and rush from the room. Eli reaches for me but I dodge from his grasp as I rush to grab my phone and purse from my room. I dial Bianca, grateful when she picks up, though how she is still awake I haven’t a clue.

“Hey girl, I was just about to call you.”
