“Can you pick me up?”

“Oh, wow— everything ok?”

“Think I could stay the night? I’ll fill you in.”

“I’m actually kind of staying at Scott’s—” she starts but I must be on speaker phone because he finishes the sentence for her.

“You are always welcome here, Kitty Kat. We are coming now.”

“Thank you, Scott.”

I hang up and turn to see Ax standing in the doorway listening to my conversation.

“Scott?” He asks curiously.

“Yup. I’m out of your hair for the night. Bye.”

I step to the door but he doesn’t budge.

“You aren’t going out—”

“Bite me. Last I checked my dad has a say over my well-being, not you.”

“So, should we give him a call then?” He challenges.

I grit my teeth. There’s no reason I shouldn’t be able to leave the house but for some reason I am convinced Ax will help my father find one.

“Let me go.”

“I just need an hour or two with no girl around distracting my guys,” he sighs. “You don’t need to spend the night anywhere.”

“Well, I’m an overachiever.”

I hear laughter and know Asher and Eli are both outside the door.

“Tell her the real reason you came up here, jackass,” Asher calls.

Ax glares at the other side of the door then turns to me. “I shouldn’t have made a comment about…” his voice trails and I can feel my heart pounding.

“Guess my dad doesn’t always keep secrets to himself. How’d you get him to tell you about that?”

Ax is silent and I raise an eyebrow, waiting.

“I have my ways.”

“Yeah and if my dad is involved, it’s money.”

I sigh and rub my temples, thoroughly done with this conversation and realizing I need a break from this house more than I thought I did.

“I’m 19. I’m an adult. I don’t have doctor’s appointments today and I don’t need a chaperone to leave the house. My dad signs off on treatment plans and bills or some shit, not my every move. So, go ahead and call him. But you can be the one listening to him scream because I’m leaving.”

This time I shove him back and he stumbles a little in surprise.

“Only if you answer one question honestly, Katie.”

I frown and stop at the top of the stairs.

“It’s Kate. And why should I?”
