“Don’t get it on the carpet,” Ax warns me, then eyes Edgar. “I need to speak with you.”

He nods to Eli and Asher and the guys all disappear while I get to work on the doors. It takes multiple coats of the new paint to fully cover the glitter but I finally finish around the time the sunsets. I bring the other bags to my bathroom and change out the shower curtain and rugs from the rainbow colors to dark purple ones I chose. I switch out the pink toothpaste holder and soap dispenser for black ones, and glance around. Aside from the light pink walls, the bathroom looks much more tolerable.

Not to mention the decorations are of my own choosing. The smallest bit of control over my own life I am able to have.

“That’s all you bought?” Eli asks, leaning on the doorframe.

I jump and glare at him. “You scared the crap out of me!”

“Least we’re in the bathroom,” he grins.

I roll my eyes. “So gross,” I chuckle. “And what do you mean? I thought it looked better.”

He shrugs. “You had your hands on Ax’s credit card. Figured you’d ring it up more.”

I chuckle at the childish suggestion. It definitely had crossed my mind. “His money that I’ll be paying him back for using. Besides, it is a bathroom, it doesn’t need diamond chandeliers,” I remind him, and he grins.

“Couldn’t hurt. Gonna leave the walls?”

“No, I’m just wiped. Your doors took way longer to fix than it took to paint them the first time.”

“Serves you right. Hope you learned your lesson.”

I just grin up at him and he sighs, shaking his head at me.

“You’re impossible.”

My phone rings as I enter the kitchen and I frown.

“What the hell did you tattle on me for now?” I mumble at Ax as I sit down next to Eli and answer my phone. “Hey dad.”

“Don’t ‘hey dad’ me,” he screams, making me flinch from how loud he is screaming. “You want to explain why the fuck Jackson Wentworth is asking for a copy of your durable power of attorney documents!”

“Durable power of what?” I ask, confused.

“Exactly! You stupid bitch. What did you say to Bianca?! You don’t even know what it is and that’s for a good reason. It’s none of your business!”

My face falls as I realize all three guys are watching me closely and can hear him screaming despite it not being on speaker phone. I go to stand up, but Eli gently grips my shoulder to stop me.

“Whatever little stunt you think you are trying to pull, you need to cut it out. Do you hear me?”

“Yes,” I say weakly as I stare at the table top silently.

“I don’t know, Stephen,” I hear Mary-Mae say soothingly to my father as though trying to console him. “It sounds like she might be taking a turn. I should call the boys to get her meds so she can get some rest.”

My empty hand curls into a fist in my lap as it trembles.

“Is that what you need, Katelyn? A good night's sleep?” My father hisses and I hear the warning loud and clear.

“I’ll be fine.”

“Good.”

The line falls dead, and without looking up to meet any of the other guys' eyes, I quickly stand and rush from the room. I hear them all call my name but I ignore them as I run to my room, closing the door and pacing for a moment before grabbing the pillow off my bed and screaming into it. My father never used to talk to me like this. To be fair, I don’t have many memories of him talking to me at all.

But the couple I do have were never like this.

I’m too busy feeling sorry for myself as I cry into my pillow after collapsing onto my bed that I don’t even hear the door open. The mattress sinks in, startling me, and I glance over to see Asher eyeing me nervously.
