Page 38 of Saving Kate

The doctor shakes his head at us mumbling something about us being a pain in the ass as Eli shows him the way out. Before the front door even closes, Kate’s screams lessen and her body starts to go limp in my arms.

Fuck me.

“No,” she says as her eyes struggle to focus. “You promised.”

“I know. I’m sorry.”

“Hate you,” she slurs.

“I know,” I whisper as I let go of the hold I have on her.

Her head flops toward my chest despite her protesting and struggling against the medication. I brush her blonde hair out of her face as it sticks to her clammy skin.

“Don’t let him,” she slurs as Eli comes back to the room, standing in the doorway with his fists clenched. “He can’t. No more. Don’t let him,” she continues.

“He’s gone. It’s alright,” I murmur in her ear as I cup her cheek gently.

“Don’t let him. Don’t touch me. No,” she continues and I glance at Eli.

“This is fucked up, man,” Eli sighs, shaking his head.

“Would you rather her disappear into some shit hospital again?” I snap but he just glares at me.

Despite her being asleep, her face looks anything but peaceful. I scoop her up and she mumbles, protesting even as she sleeps. I carry her past Eli, who just continues to glare at me, as I bring her up to her room. Eli follows me the whole way and I can feel the tension radiating off of him.

I lay her in the bed, taking in the new bedspread and paint. I pull the comforter over her, and turn to tell Eli to back the fuck off, when Kate begins mumbling again.

“No, no,” she mutters. “Hurts.”

I clench my fist and throw a punch at the wall. Thankfully, it doesn’t cause a hole but I still slam my palm against it again and again. “Fuck!” I yell.

Eli and I both stand there like that for a minute before he pulls his phone from his pocket.

He smirks, and glances at me. “Asher’s pissed.”

“Asher can fuck off.”

Kate's whimpers finally go silent, and I glance around the room again.

“Better than the pink,” Eli chuckles and I smirk. “You see the bathroom?”

I push the door open and take in the minimal changes of color. Not even the walls have been repainted and the shower curtain looks like something from the family dollar.

“She thinks she’s gonna be able to pay you back,” Eli says, crossing his arms with a knowing look on his face. “Didn’t want to rack up your card too much.”

“Shut up.”

I pull my own phone from my pocket, texting Sheila, my interior decorator, a photo of the bathroom and bedroom letting her know she needs to come update the place with the new color scheme. Sheila is over the top, not caring about expense, but in her defense I probably shouldn’t have told her pink and glitter the first time she came to decorate the place.

A throat clearing from the door grabs our attention and I find Edgar eyeing Kate's lifeless form.

“Yes?” I snap at his accusing eye.

“I wanted to inform you that Mister Parker has returned.”

Awesome.

Asher is gonna be fucking pissed.
