His eyes flick to me curiously and he finally nods. “True.”

He pulls into the driveway after getting through security and I glance back down at the gates again. “When I first got here, I was confused how my dad could have such a big place. Or why he had all this security for that matter. Makes sense now.”

“Because it’s not your dad’s,” Ax says simply.

“Are there like, drugs and murder weapons hidden all through the house? I’m pleading ignorance if you ever get raided.”

“You have a big fucking mouth, you know that?” He says with a sigh, but I don’t miss the curve of his lips as he fights a smile.

I climb out of the car and shrug. “Guess I really should have a better look around the place,” I chuckle.

Ax glares at me. “No redecorating.”

I grin up at him. “No promises.”

He stomps through the garage into the kitchen where Eli and Asher are eating pasta and Rhonda cleans up dishes. “All set?” Eli asks and Ax nods as he helps himself to a plate.

My stomach twists. I haven’t eaten in days and my body is finally realizing it at the smell of the food. Rhonda wipes her hands as she comes closer to me with a soft smile. “Edgar had me grab some stuff for you, they are in the freezer if you’d like me to heat one up.”

Why couldn’t Edgar have just been my father? The silly old man has the biggest heart.

“I can do it, thank you.”

I pull a hot pocket from the freezer and place it in the microwave. Even the hot pocket sounds disgusting but it won’t be as filling as pasta. I’ll probably only manage to eat half of it before feeling like throwing up, anyway. I'd rather Rhonda think I’m sick off microwave meals than her cooking.

When the microwave beeps, I pull the hot pocket onto a plate and turn to realize that all three guys are watching me. My face burns red as Asher cocks an eyebrow at my meal choice. Before he can open his mouth, I bring it out to the patio and sit by the pool to eat in silence. Despite Ax somehow getting my dad off as my proxy — he still managed to get himself assigned the job. I feel more in the dark about my own life than I even want to admit.

Sure enough, after a few bites of food I feel nauseous.

I groan as the queasy feeling just intensifies under the hot sun and drag myself inside. I scrape my plate, ignoring Eli’s eyes watching me.

“You alright? You look pale.”

“Are you making fun of my lack of tan, Elijah Daniel?” I tease weakly.

He smirks at me gently but I see the pity in his eyes. “That too, yeah.”

“I’m just tired.”

I step forward on wobbly legs and Eli takes my arm to steady me. My body tenses and he brushes a thumb along the skin of my elbow as though he senses it. “The library has a sofa, come on.”

“I’m fine—”

“Let me help you, Kate. Please?”

I give in, not stupid enough to try to walk off the dizziness that’s overcoming me. I’m grateful once we get to the library and I lay down against the cool leather.

“Are you sick?” He asks, sitting on the floor by me and propping his elbows up on his knees.

“It’s from the medicine,” I admit quietly. “It makes me feel… off for a little bit.”

“Does it make you crave hot pockets, too?” He asks and I glance up at him through my lashes as I chuckle.

“Not exactly.”

It’s silent for a bit but I find comfort in the silence. It feels strangely safe having this guy I barely know watching over me while I wait for the world to stop spinning.

“Do you know why Ax would take over as my proxy?” I ask hesitantly and hope I don’t ruin the peace.
