“Damnit Katie,” he sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose before running a hand through his messy black hair. “I can’t answer any more of your questions right now. Just sign the papers so you can’t get shipped back to the hospital whenever your dad snaps his fingers.”

His words infuriate me but the guilt in his eyes twists my stomach. I vaguely remember him whispering words of comfort into my ear as he held me down and a little voice tells me it wasn’t something he enjoyed anymore than I did.

Not that I forgive him.

“What if—” I start to ask Mister Wentworth but Ax grabs my hand in his.

I try to pull out of his grasp but he holds on firmly. “Just trust me. At least more than you trust your dad.”

He’s got me there. At this point I’d trust almost anyone more than my dad.

“Fine. But my trust fund still can’t be touched, right? Until I’m 21? Not even by my proxy?”

I glance at Mister Wentworth. He looks at Ax like he wonders if he should talk about personal stuff in front of him but finally nods. “No one can touch your trust fund until you are 21.”

I grit my teeth and nod as I pick up the pen to sign the paperwork. Ax stands but Mister Wentworth clears his throat as I stand up.

“I’ll be in touch,” he tells us both though it sounds somewhat like a warning. “Katelyn doesn’t deserveanyof the cards she’s been dealt.”

Ax mutters a “no shit” as he stomps his way out of the office. Mister Wentworth sighs and offers me a sympathetic smile. “Take care of yourself, Kate.”

“Thank you, Mister Wentworth.”

CHAPTER TWELVE

The ride back to the house is filled with music until Ax’s Bluetooth starts ringing. He glances at me then answers the call.

“What?”

I roll my eyes at how rudely he answers all of his calls.

“I got some information on that little paper trail you asked about.”

“Come by tonight.”

“See you then.”

He goes to turn the music back up but eyes me. “What’s with the look?”

I chuckle and shake my head. “Do you literally have any friends? You just bark orders at everyone.”

“Why don’t you be a good dog and just sit quietly.”

I glare at him. “Eavesdrop much?”

“It’s my house. And you were hardly whispering,” he smirks. “Be careful with Asher. I’m sure he wouldn’t turn down collaring and leashing you.”

His dark chuckle tells me that’s some reference to a type of sex fetish and my cheeks heat up at his words.

“You guys are gross.”

“My bad. Forgot the princess was a prude.”

“I am not a prude,” I mumble.

Ax snorts at me as if he knows I’m lying.

“Oh shut up. It’s not exactly matchmaker central at the hospital.”
