Eli doesn’t look irritated with me, just sighs as he runs a hand over his short hair. His dark eyes lock on mine and my eyes trail the tattoos down his neck before finally meeting his gaze.

“What happened the other day… that was horrible. I mean, I know for you obviously. But just sitting there helplessly? I hate myself for it. And Ax?” He sighs and runs a hand over his face as his brows pinch together and his jaw tightens. “He had a reallyhard time, you know? Doing that to you. He just wants to be sure that never happens again.”

I say nothing, unable to explain the emotions his words bring. I just nod silently.

“I answered your question,” he smirks. “Wanna tell me about the hot pockets?”

I chuckle as my eyes fall closed with heaviness again.

“After my mom died,” I start, and try to breathe away the nerves. “I had a hard time. My dad pushed medications, the medications made me sick, and I stopped eating. Even when I did have an appetite, I avoided meals because I didn’t want to see him. It also pissed him off if I got sick after one of his cooks prepared some extravagant meal. Edgar started sneaking me microwave meals and snacks instead, worried about me not eating. Its just kind of… comforting now I guess.”

“Reminds you that he cares about you?”

I smile as my body grows heavy. “Yeah, I guess. It’s nice having someone care sometimes.”

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I hear nothing else as I doze off on the couch and by the time I wake up, the sun has set and the room is empty.

I groan and stretch my arms up as my back cracks relieving the pressure from my spine. God that feels good.

I hear laughter and jump, only now noticing Ax and Eli across the hall eyeing me. “You need a few minutes alone over there?” Eli grins and I roll my eyes at him.

“Shut up,” I laugh. “This couch sucks.”

“You weren’t complaining during your five hour nap,” Ax mutters as I come closer to the room they are in.

“Damn,” I say, glancing at the clock.

They get sucked back into the video game they are playing and I shake my head at them. No matter how old, it seems boys will always be boys.

The doorbell rings as I head towards the kitchen, surprised that someone is visiting, given how late it is. I have to remind myself this is Ax’s house, not mine. He strikes me as a night owl anyway. He and Eli both eye me before heading for the door, and I glare at them.

“You aren’t locking me in any cellars,” I warn them.

“It’s a furnished basement, not a prison cell,” Eli chuckles.

“It’s fine just stay out of the study,” Ax says, pulling the door open.

Before I turn away I can’t help but find myself being nosey. The shorter guy at the door has sunglasses on and a bandana covering his head. The tattoo of a viper on his neck is the first thing I notice. He pushes his sunglasses to the top of his head and looks straight past the guys to eye me.

“Didn’t realize you had a date tonight, boys,” the guy says, pushing past the guys and making his way inside. “Don’t let me stop you from having some fun, of course.”

He winks at me and I cross my arms across my chest. “They wish I was their date.”

The guy grins, revealing a gold tooth, and I have to stop myself from gagging right there in front of him.

“Well, then let me introduce myself properly,” he grins. “Friends call me Stix.”

I cover my mouth to try and cover the snort that sneaks out. “Seriously?”

He gives me a dirty look but before he can say anything else Ax sighs loudly. “Stix, head to the study, I don’t have all night to listen to you try to sleeze your way intoKate'sbed.”

He barks my name strangely at the guy and while it doesn’t make sense to me, the guy seems to connect some type of dots. “Ah! Sothisis Kate?” He grins and eyes me up and down without bothering to hide it. “Well…”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing,” Ax snaps. “Now, Stix.”
