Stix just shakes his head, chuckling at some joke I’m missing, as he heads inside the office with all the security cameras.Apparently each floor has its own study equipped with access to all the cameras and I make a mental note to make sure there’s no cameras in my bedroom.

I roll my eyes at Eli and Ax as I head to grab a soda from the fridge and the peanut butter crackers magically laying on the counter for me. I grin softly to myself and make a mental note to thank Edgar and Rhonda. I take advantage of the silence to wander throughout the house, and while I refuse to go into a basement of a stranger’s house alone — especially after said stranger has threatened to lock me in it — I find that I’ve only seen half of the bottom floor so far.

Off the garage is another half of the house that has a fully equipped gym, big surprise. As much as the guys drive me insane, I’m not naive enough to think their muscles just appear on their own. I find another security team out back and wave to them as they briefly look up from something on the television to wave back. The last room I come to is dark when I push the door open and when I flip on the light my heart threatens to jump out of my body.

A music room.

Mirrors line the wall and I spot a guitar, keyboard, piano, sound system and microphone neatly placed throughout the room. Speakers line the ceiling and the padding along the walls tells it must be sound proofed. I’m about to turn and leave the room, too overcome with emotions, when a large closed case to the side stops me. My feet move on their own as I make my way over and brush my fingers along the case. It looks like it’s never even been opened.

I unzip it, carefully exposing the cello inside and my hands shake as I run my fingers down the strings carefully.

“About time you found this room,” I hear and jump.

I can’t stop the burning in my cheeks, feeling like I’ve been caught doing something I shouldn’t be doing. Ax must notice it too because he raises an eyebrow.

“I said you were free to explore the house. You’re fine.”

“I’m gonna head to bed—”

“Hey wait,” he stops me as he blocks the doorway with his arm. “What’s wrong? I thought you’d like this room.”

“It’s nice,” I force out.

He looks down at me, his eyes a mix of anger and confusion.

“Nice?” He snorts. “Yeah. It’s reallynice,” he repeats and I grit my teeth. “Everything in here is new.”

“Good for you,” I say awkwardly.

“I got them for you. Your dad said you're some type of music whiz.”

“My dad’s a liar, remember?”

His lips form a straight line as he grits his teeth. “So, you don’t play?”

“No.”

I push past him, ignoring his grunt as I elbow my way past, and head to my room. Or at least I would make it to my room if Ax’s friend Stix doesn’t grab me. “Where are you running off to kitten?”

“Let go of her,” Eli snaps at him.

Stix puts his hands up in surrender. “My bad, my bad,” he chuckles. “Forgot the princess was off limits.”

I hate when Ax calls me that.

But I hate it even more when I hear Stix say it.

I glare at him as I go to walk past again but Stix barely moves aside, making me squeeze past him. He nudges himself closer making me bump into the wall. I hear Eli start to say something but it is cut off by the thumping of Stix’s body against the wall as he’s pulled off of me..

“Thought you went to the bar, Ax,” Stix chuckles uncomfortably. “Was just saying goodnight to your friend here.”

Ax smashes him against the wall again and I yelp at the sound of his head smashing into it.

“Why doesn’t Eli give you a ride, Stix,” Ax hisses.

Whatever Stix is being threatened with, it’s read loud and clear as Stix’s face pales.

“Ax, man—”
