Page 56 of Saving Kate

Eli smiles softly and I find him watching me rather than looking around. My face flushes as I quickly turn back to look out the open window and he chuckles.

“Don’t laugh at me, Elijah Daniels.”

“I like you, Kate.”

My head flings around to gawk at him, waiting for him to tell me he’s joking, but instead he just reaches out and tucks a strand of hair behind my ear.

“I— uh— I don’t really date…” I blurt awkwardly

I don’t really date.

That’s what comes out of my mouth?

I internally scream at how stupid I sound, but Eli just grins.

“You’re cute when you're embarrassed.”

My face reddens even more and he laughs loudly making my body warm and those damn flutters return.

“And I wasn’t asking you to date. You have… a lot going on,” he says, raising an eyebrow at me knowingly. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t let you know that you are getting to me.”

“I uh… I don’t really know what I’m supposed to say,” I admit as the Ferris Wheel starts moving again.

Eli doesn’t look the least bit put off by my comment, he just smiles softly. “Just know I’m here, alright?”

I smile back at him. “I mean, we do live together.”

Eli laughs. “Now, now Kate. Don’t go sneaking into my room at night or anything. I didn’t say I was there just yet,” he warns me as we stand to get off the Ferris Wheel.

My face blushes as I realize the attendant overheard his comment and he looks me up and down. I shove Eli as we walk towards the exit gates and his face shows pure amusement.

“You did that on purpose, he totally thinks I’m some perv.”

Eli chuckles. “I don’t know, they say the quiet ones are usually the kinkiest.”

My face burns hot as I sit in the passenger seat and glare at him. “You did not just say that.”

“I absolutely did and it got just the reaction I thought it would,” he grins and his finger brushes my cheek. “Is this embarrassment because I’m right or because your prudish mind is being split in half right now?”

“I’m not a prude!” I argue. “I kissed Scott during seven minutes in heaven because he was too scared to make the first move.“

Eli holds back a laugh. “Weren’t you all in middle school.”

I roll my eyes. “Semantics.”

Eli chuckles and reaches over to take my hand.

“I’m just messing with you,” he says smiling. “I know you missed your high school years and are just getting the chance to see what it’s like to be free from things, including your dad. But, to be honest, my reason for taking you out today was purely selfish.”

I look at him confused before staring back at our hands that are still intertwined. “How so?”

“I had to beat Asher to the punch.”

I glance back at him confused and the sides of his lips twitch up.

“He wanted to take you. And I knew he’d tell you he liked you if he did, so I had to make sure you knew I was here, too.”

“Wait. What?”
