Eli laughs and shakes his head as he continues driving.

“It’s cute that you’re so naive to things sometimes.”

“Did you insult me while you complimented me just now?” I frown and he grins.

“I did.”

“Jerk.”

He chuckles. “Anything you say, beautiful.”

I bite my lip to keep from smiling but Eli reaches up and frees my lip from my teeth. “We all care about you, you know that much at least right? You’ve got us.”

I smirk. “Pretty sure Ax may argue with that. But thank you. I feel really bad, honestly. I don’t even know any of you and I’ve just kind of… crashed into your lives. But I don’t really know what I would have done otherwise.”

“Have you told Ax that?” Eli asks, eyeing me.

“I haven’t seen him since last night. You kind of stole me away,” I remind him and he grins triumphantly.

“Don’t regret it for a second,” he chuckles. “Just make sure you let him know that you’re in a better headspace than last night. You scared him a bit.”

I look at Eli surprised and he pulls my hand to his lips to brush a kiss across my knuckles.

“You scared all of us, actually.”

I open my mouth to apologize but he shakes his head just kissing my knuckles softly once more.

“Don’t apologize for something that isn’t your fault. Ever.”

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

I’m not sure what I expected going out with Eli today, but it pales in comparison to what I find when I get back to the house. Bianca and Scott are eating pizza by the pool while a handful of guys are talking to Ax and Asher in the kitchen.

“Have fun at the amusement park?” One of the guys asks with a grin and Asher’s face falls.

“Dude, not cool, I said I was taking her.”

Eli shrugs and hands me a soda from the fridge.

“I definitely don’t mind going again,” I suggest and the frown quickly disappears as Asher winks at me.

“Deal!” He announces and taps his beer to my soda can.

“Ah, so we share around here?” One of the younger guys, probably seventeen at most, asks.

It takes a minute for me to realize he means sharemeand I frown. Before I can even say anything Ax is leaning across the table and the room goes silent.

“Get out.”

The kid opens his mouth to speak but the guy next to him has a gun to his head before he can say a word. I instinctively take a step behind Asher who is closest to me and he puts a protective arm out to scoot me further behind him.

“I said, get the fuck out of my house,” Ax hisses at the kid. “If you want to leave with both your legs you’ll start running.”

The kid doesn’t hesitate this time and quickly disappears. Bianca and Scott hear the commotion and linger by the doorway. Bianca stands by me and takes my hand to squeeze it as she whispers to ask if I’m okay. I nod and she glances around the room.

“Now,” Ax sighs, running a hand through his thick hair in irritation. “Anyone else feel the need to make any smart ass comments tonight?”

Silence.
